Hi,

Given that it's supposed to be "IPSC", I wouldn't expect to have to be a member of USPSA to shoot in one of their matches, but this is US we're talking about, and they are a bit like Microsoft - they believe in standards and rules only as long as they made/set them... ;)

This is not a question about anything legal, just purely for the purposes of the matches themselves - is membership in IPSC Canada enough?

Obviously if I wanted to be classified there I'd need to be a member, but if I just want to shoot as U, do I need a USPSA membership? Thanks.

I was at one club that required 'holstering' training ie: USPSA club training. My Black Badge training did not count - and I'm a member of USPSA. Generally though, I think IPSC Canada membership will allow you to shoot. Membership is only $50.00 and gets you a subscription to 'Front Sight'. Probably worth the $50.00....

Oh, yah.... I also used my USPSA membership to back up invitation documentation to get my Form 6 NIA approved instead of using a hunting licence.

You don’t need to be a member of USPSA for club matches (but some clubs do require it) or their Level 3 matches. You may not be able to shoot some “Section Matches” (like our Level 2’s) because they usually require USPSA Membership.

The Area Matches and Nationals do have international competitors but as you mentioned unless you have a USPSA Classification you’re shooting as a U. Some matches have a pretty good prize table and if you’re a “B” class shooter you could be competing against an unclassified GM in your division so your chances of getting anything are pretty slim. (Not that I ever worried about a prize table)

If you join USPSA you can get classified so you’re competing against people of similar skill and you will find at the major matches the competition can be pretty tough. I also felt the USPSA by monthly magazine; Front Site is worth the price of membership anyways.

FYI: Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club is currently the only USPSA Foreign Affiliate club in Canada and does hold USPSA Classifiers on their Tuesday IPSC nights (usually the months with 5 Tuesdays)
