Need your help deciding on a 1911

Sorry, but it's a fact.
There are about a million threads about the pros and cons of guide rods. I tend to side with virtually every top competitor who use them, and the top gunsmiths who install them. Most modern rendition 1911's come with them and every custom I've ever drooled over has one. I respect your right to an opinion, but I don't agree.

 The stock recoil system in a 1911 actually has two guides for the recoil spring that work together... The recoil spring plug acts a a guide externally, rather than internally like a rod, and the short recoil spring guide. They do just fine on their own. You are trying to "correct" a problem that does not exist. Sorry, but it's a fact. ;)

+1. There is no room for a recoil spring to kink on a 1911. The two most prominent examples of a modern fighting 1911 are the Springfield Professional as used by the FBI and the USMC's MEUSOC pistol. Both of these use a short guide rod.

Some peripheral modifications to are acceptable to enhance the the ergonomics of the platform, but departures from the basic design cause problems more than they solve them. John Browning (pbuh) knew what he was doing.

It's my understanding that the decision to go with the short rod on both of these pistols was based the ability to cycle the gun with one hand incapacitated.

Which dealers have the Rock Island Armory 1911 in stock? Which finish is available for $550?

We're thinking of importing some.

Frontier has a parkerized .45 GI-style model in stock for $550. They also had a 9mm GI for the same price but sold out.

Arms East had some in a while back but they don't have any in stock right now.

Another good reason to stick with a normal guide rod.
