Need your opinion on the wood furniture color.

My friend asked me to post it here and ask you guys about the following:

He is lucky owner of the SKS carabine and he is trying to change the wood finishing (color) of it. I am attaching two pics here. Which color (finish) is better in your opinion ?

Colour 2, imo. I've never liked a reddish tinge in wood.

I like the second, walnut stain better

If the color is from an early Sino-soviet red shellack finish, I'd leave it alone.
