Needing a bit of imput. 25-06 vs 270

I have been looking for a rifle for sheep and varmints, also possibly caribou and deer, for a while. I have decided on a Remington 700 Mtn. I have lined up one in 25-06 and one in 270.
It would be a rifle that my wife and my son start shooting on.

Any opinions between the two calibers would be great. Recoil, reloading, the superior caliber?

I think they're pretty close in most regards, and they would serve you fine for the game you listed, with the biggest being caribou, and the most common being varmints and sheep. Shot placement will be key, of course. The .270, with heavier VLD type bullets will have longer legs and more hitting power if you are really wanting to shoot farther, but some of the 115 grain VLD types in .25 cal are no slouches either. I think the real deciding factor is how much of an "all arounder" the rifle might be in the future (i.e - starting to hunt moose or grizzlies); while I do like the .25 cals, a properly handloaded .270 is a superior "all arounder".
 
I have a 300 for Moose and Bison. I would be using this one for pretty much everything else up here.
 
25/06 is my fav
75 gr for varmints and small game. 117-120 for heavier game
I've dropped a 300 lb black bear with a shot behind the shoulder just under the spine. No visible lungs left just bloody jello. 6 ribs were broke on the entrance. That was a factory Winchester 120 gr cxp2.
Deer and wolf drop when hit with 117 gr interlocks. Haven't recovered a bullet yet from an animal.
The 25/06 is way cooler than the same old 270 that everyone else has
 
Never hunted with a 270, but lots of years with a 25.06 for whitetails and muleys. It's, IMHO, the perfect caliber for deer, and should be wicked on caribou, too. More one shot DRT kills with a 25.06 than anything else I've ever used, including 30.06 and 300 WM.

My choice for ammo would be Fusion 120s, great bonded bullet that holds together, and very accurate in any gun/caliber I've shot.
 
the 25-06 has a little less recoil then the 270 which is nice for someone to learn to shoot with. Both are Great for mule deer, sheep and caribou. I currently shoot handloaded 117gr hornady bts at 3150 fps from my 25-06. If you go with the 270, there are some light weight bullet options which will make it more comfortable to shoot for someone newer to shooting
 
The .25-06 and the .270 are ballistically similar, and their range of use overlaps, although the .270 has the edge on bigger stuff, but suffers no disadvantage on smaller. If you were to shoot a coyote with either, the coyote would die, and the sewing it would take to reconstruct the hide would be equally tedious. The best answer I can think of is to search out the best rifle that meets your needs and budget, and enjoy which ever cartridge it happens to be chambered for.
 
I used a 25 for years. It will do more than most think. Use good bullets and get lots of range time (with what ever you get). Mine was loud but every one that used it liked it. If I did not reload I might go 270 or just get lots of ammo when I start.
