Hey guys. I have come across a Cooey 64 at a local shop. It's in decent shape but missing the magazine. They are asking $150 for it as is. I've been reading up on the magazine issues with these rifles. The conversion to the savage mags and what-not. I've also read a few threads here about the dislike of the 64's. I still want to buy it because it's a Cooey and I want one. What I'm wondering is are they asking too much? Too little? Is it a good deal even if I have to spend some $$$ on a conversion kit

Thanks

Sounds like a wretched deal. Plastic mags aren't cheap or common. Conversion kits aren't easy to find either since the guns that take them haven't been made for decades. You can pick up a brand new savage 64 (nearly the same rifle and still made in Canada) with scope regularly for $200 on sale at retailers and it's a much better design featuring an actual safety instead of the pushing the bolt into the receiver nonsense with the bonus of taking current production magazines. A Cooey 64A was my first rifle, given to me by a family member. The only appreciation I have for these guns is sentimental, the design is dated in some areas quite lacking.

I had one given to me as a box of parts including the conversion kit to the keyhole type mag. As it’s the same as the first rifle I ever operated, it has sentimental value to me and works well enough. There are better designs I’d pay $150 for. Aside from the dumb safety, may I say it’s a ##### to clean? I’ve lubed the bolt with dry graphite now, so as soon as the gophers come out for their therapy I’ll see how that works.

I have offered $100 and the lady laughed a little. So I haven't gone back since. I would love to have a semi-auto .22 as I already have a Marlin .22 bolt action.

Perhaps I will keep looking. Thanks everyone

You're better off buying a Marlin 795 anyway. Better gun, and inexpensive.
