Neglected guns and possible refinishing ?

I have an older friend who neglected his guns in a damp basement for several years.
He is now moving into an apartment and doesn't wish to take them with him.
The guns have varying degrees of surface rust and some with pitting.
He wants to sell them for "whatever" they are worth.
A few may be worth salvaging but of course that's debateable.

Overall its just a darn shame, but is there a gunsmith/refinisher recommended in Southern Ontario that can do rust removal and hot bluing on a couple that might be worth saving?

for example,

Weatherby MK V deluxe in .340

Ruger Red Label Ducks unlimited Limited edition cased 12g , among others

Might be worth at least exploring this option..

thanks

It's a shame this happens however it's more frequent than you think. Make a list of everything he has with a description. Best to sell as is as it's costly to do this kind of restoration work. You might not be able to recover your restoration cost so better to sell.

Some people will take these on as a personal project where time is not factored in. I did a real rough 410 Mossberg 500 for a friend who was getting it for his grandson. He paid $80 for it and I did the metal and he did the stock. It wasn't perfect but was made presentable and useable.

All the guns would have value if they are functional . Some might restore them , but many people may just be looking for a spare camp gun or truck gun , and not really care about appearance as long as they function dependably . Paying for a professional restoration prior to sale may be more trouble/cost than what they are worth .

you would be surprised how much better they could look with some 0000 steel wool and gun oil to lightly polish and wipe off the surface rust. i would suggest working on one at a time and then figuring out as you go if you need hot blueing etc? There are options depending on what you want to do do with them. KG GUNKOTE or other metal finish. might as well make them functional and shooters. storing for future value didn't get this guy too far.
