So I've had a short stack of parts sitting around for a bit, but no motivation, when all of a sudden on the long week end the motivation fairy visited me and this is what happened. I used a wilson bobtail jig and their mainspring housing, Chip McCormick slim line grips and bushings, a Wilson ambi saftey, and a new nicholson file to bevel the mag well and this is what I got. What do you all think?

Sorry the pics arent' better, any photograpy tips are appriciated!

The cold blue I used didn't do the greatest job, but I'm going to get a melt bushing for the barrell, and do a full melt on the gun and then probably get the whole thing either parkerized or reblued, havent decided yet....

Thanks! I was hoping I'd get at least one of those, before the "dumb@ss" comments start:D. The only real complaint is that the old mainspring pin hole didn't totally clean up as it ideally would've, you can faintly see it on either side of the bob. I fit the new housing as directed, so I'm writing it off to vageries of the norinco frame....yeah, thats' the ticket!

Use a tripod and don't use the camera flash if possible. Use the lowest ISO setting (50, 80 or 100). Natural light, an overcast sky works real well.

Nice job. Somehow I think there will be a few 1911s modified due to your example. Got me considering it.

Love the new Norc compact.... But bobtail type 1911's have never done it for me. Nice work on your project though, anyway...

Dumb@ss! Just kidding--I think it looks really good :). How does it feel/handle compared with the regular frame contour and mainspring housing?

I liked the look when I saw them, and I have small hands and find it quite comfortable.

You have to relocate and drill a new mainspring housing pinhole about, say, 5/16-3/8" higher up the grip frame, the old one is removed in the bobtail.

I didn't take any pictures, ment to, got into the project and thought of it again when I was done

Anyone who wants to try is welcome to borrow the jig to use, and I"ll toss a new drill and center drill into the bag. If you really know what your doing, you could drill the new hole on a GOOD, SQUARE drill press with the vice bolted down in location, but it's much easier on a mill. Actually remvoving the material could easily be done with a file, though again, I removed the bulk of it on the mill then blended by hand.

I did it on the norc commander because I figured if I was going to screw up learning, it would be an economical opps, but it was really quite a simple process, beveling the mag well was much more tedious.

Mag well took about 45 minutes, no jig, just a variety of 6 and 4 inch files of different profiles. If I'd had a better way to hold the frame then wrapping it in a shop rag and putting it in a poor vice and making sure not to crush it, I could have done it in 20 minutes, but I'm a tool and die maker and do a lot of hand work..

A small round or half round file is good at the front of the well, and a small square or triangular file at the back to match the bevel from the side to the back of the mag well, a bastard cut to rough, mill or flat smooth to finish, then some 320 emery to remove the last file marks.

That's an awsome improvement in the shape of the gun:rockOn: Congrats.
I've seen probably all mods in the shape of the trigger guard, beavertail, slide, safety lever and whatnot, but I must say that your mod is one of the nicest I've seen on that type of gun.

Glad to see somebody who is not complaining
of the hardness of the norc steel.
Maybe one day, if you have time you'll post
close-up pics of the magwell with the mag inserted.

Soon I'll have all the jigging and tooling for 1911 and I'll start machining receivers from forgings and I'll see what I come up with.

I'd love to swap notes with you when you do, It's something I'd like to try as well....

What sort of mag do you want to see, a standard one, or a chip mccormick with a bumper on it.

As to the steel, pretty good I'd have to say, cut well, and the chips didn't string, so it's probably 35-45 rc range

I don't have pictures but when my super (in my Montreal apartment) saw my welding outfit he asked what it was and then I showed him the safe.. When I moved it I dropped it and cracked a weld... today I bought a grinder and found some paint that matches pretty close... and it's now welded, ground, and painted... I've finished 3 stocks and re-stocked 2 M-14's and a Mini-14... My ace pignose is finally enroute so I'll mount an AR stock on my R22 when it gets here.... Drill and tap the receiver... I'm sure I must be nuts...

When I was at home I took my shop for granted and never really got much done now I really miss it...

If you hadn't of pointed that out, I would have missed it. Looks more like it belongs there, some type of detent. Pitty I just traded my Norc NP30, as that is a sweet mod!

Well done! Looks sharp! Pics of the jig and tools would be appreciated.

I'll toss up a pic of the jig, as long as I remember . The tools where simpley a 5/32 drill, a number 2 center drill, a .5" carbide 4 flute cutter and a couple of files and 600-800 grit paper
