New .284 Shehane

From what I understand, 30-06 brass would end up too short. I have heard of necking up 270 win to 30, then back down to 7mm to create a false shoulder before fire forming. Just seems like a lot of extra work when you you can buy a box of 280 rem. They head space off the shoulder to minimize stretching in the web area. I wish winchester would quit nickel plating their 280 brass. I shouldn't be complaining though, I love the gun, the cartridge, and have a system that works.

you can neck down 06' brass but the neck is noticeably shorter, i am not sure if that "unshielded "part of the chamber (being the throat) will take more of a shyt kicking as a result? it is a fair amount of work to neck down and fireform before it is really usable. in the future i think i am going back to what i started with, nosler ai brass. i agree that it is not as stong as the lapua. but the weights are excellent. my prevous barrel had 1200 rounds through it last spring when i was doing more load work with it and was consistently shooting 1.5" groups (with the odd one just over 1") at 400 meters. i took that barrel off at the end of the year only because it was copper fouling ...and i hate cleaning guns!! it had 1600 rounds through it. i actually plan on putting it back on some time this year to do some more experimenting. i should point out that for 90% of that barrel life i was shooting 162 pills at 3000 so possibly that is why that barrel lasted like it did,...as opposed to shooting the 180 at 2950 +

Getting this thread back on track......

I gots me some 4831SC this weekend (Thanks Brian :D) so I will be loading some of this magical powder up for Wednesday Night Choir Practice......we sing with a BANG!!

Hopefully I can get a good working load for FFing then really let loose once my die set arrives.

BTW, I got my Haydon Arbor Press in the mail the other day (Shehane Die Set uses Wilson seater and neck die) and this thing is built like a tank. I would use it to press bearings into wheels if I was needing to do so.

Here is a stock photo if you haven't visited their site.

Got some 190 Matrix loaded up tonight, I will go out tomorrow after work for some chronying and groups.

Runout after sizing up and neck turning is horrendous (up to .010) so I have indexed all my rounds at the highest culmination point on the dial so hopefully they shoot well enough to find a decent accurate load for FFing.

Looking forward to your results with the Matrix 190 gn bullets!

What were you seating with to get those results?

Redding Comp Seater....the brass is the culprit, you can see it just turning the unloaded brass on the runout gauge.

Tbo has the same issue with his....same lot of 6.5-284 brass from the same source and he has not neck turned his, only necked it up.

Results with the 190 Matrix tonight were less than stellar, 2 guns (1 .284 Shehane [fireforming] and 1 straight .284) and nothing made us go WOW. Both shooting basically 55.5-57grn of the 4831SC

Velocities from 2800-2880 and nothing was really grouping well at 300m.

Best "grouping" I had ran an avg of 2803 (5 shots) with a lower load of 54.5grn of 4831SC and had the last 3 shots under 1/2" but the first 2 shots of the group were down and away 1" and 2" low respectively. ES was 30Fps With a high of 2819 and a low of 2789.

I felt myself flinching now and again tonight anticipating that the scope was going to come back and rip a gaping wound in my forehead. When I relaxed and let the gun do it's job things did go a little smoother. I think moving the scope out 1 more notch on the rail will help. The flinching and recoil anticipation may have attributed, more trigger time is required behind this I think.

Both of us found tonight that it will take a bit of getting used to shooting the higher recoil rifles. The .260 from the 6BR was a step up but a manageable step.

Richard, do you think the recoil issue might be handled better w/ a more substantial stock? I havn't handled the XR stock, but using as much of your weight limit as possible is a good idea.

With the Bipod I should be less than a pound under max weight.

The only other option would be to add some lead to the stock to get me just under which I may pursue.

The other shooter was shooting a heavier stock than my own with the same bipod setup but a 2" shorter barrel.

The way I see it, there's no reason not to be just under max weight. It can't hurt you, so long as you are firmly within the limit, and the more weight there is to soak up recoil, the better.

:) Mine is 20 grams under max wt, I will have to make sure I clean it before I let them weigh it :)

Just need to get the use of a scale again that will handle the 21+ lbs

Those kitchen scales from House of Knives just don't cut it. LOL

For load development i would go as heavy as possible, nothing wrong with getting behind a 30lbs gun to check the accuracy of handloads.
I made something that attaches to the butt of the gun (out of steel) and added 13 lbs to my guns overall weight and the round bar slides real nice on the rear bag.
Here are a couple of pics of Scott Parkers rifle to illustrate the point

Mercury

Richard, what about a mercury recoil absorber. Check them out on Brownells web site. They only weigh a few ounces and apparently work. Thinking of this for my RUM build.
