New .284 Shehane

Shehane

Hey Ian, Seriousssss 2200 rounds, and 12 firings on this batch of Lapua Brass.

Bing1010 = 180 Berger VLD 2850 fps (23.2moa @ 900m from 100yard O )
Krieger 8.5 twist finish @ 30''(new barrel is 9twist 5R hoping for
alittle more fps)
Had the 180s up to 3010fps with R17

Had it out last Wednesday and ended up blowing a primer so I need to get things checked out.

It hit so hard it drove the ejector back far enough to bend the roll pin and the plunger stayed in there. Had to get some cleaner in there to get it to let go so I could get the pin out and replace it.

This was the 31st round down the barrel with the same load. All other brass and primers were showing nothing unusual then blam......gas in the face on the 17th round of the night and I proceeded to pack it up into its case.

I am pretty anal about my loading so it's a slim chance that it was an overload but nothing is impossible.

Looking to find a jug of 4831SC now.

When I was testing the 16 rounds before that one, it was shooting OK but not as good as I thought it would have. At 500m I was shooting V's and 5's and then it went 5, 12 O-clock 4, V, 12 O-clock 4, V..........G:

Now why would the captain of the Canadian F-class team try to sabotage his best shooter? ;):nest:

Yeah, considering he was three feet away from me on the next mat, it was pretty stupid, wasn't it? I just figured that when the doctors were finished with him, he'd look like a cat's a$$hole with an earring and a tongue stud. I just figured that would look pretty funny.b:f:P:f:P:2:

Hey Richard, your going to need a caddy to carry all those irons for you pretty soon. I gotta get one of those thumb hole stocks.

Hope to get out there and send some down range with you guys this year.

Good luck with the new rig.

Richard what Load was THAT ??

51gr RL 17 which is not a hot load even for the unformed .284 parent case so I am still unsure what the issue is.....maybe those big Berger bullets are the issue.

I know Mick got a new throater at .285 so I might get him to run that in to open it up as it needs a bit more freebore anyway, the BT is getting pushed passed the Neck/Shoulder Junction.

I took it out tonite after having the throat lengthened .051

Took out 180 Berger VLDs, 180 Berger BT's and some Chinchaga 175 RBBT's

Loaded 50gr of RL17 in each of the cases and seated both the VLD's and the RBBT's .015 into the lands and loaded the BT's .020 off the lands.

Chronied the loads and shot 10 shot groups at 300m in winds bookending from 8mph to 23.8mph :eek:

I forgot to reset the chrono after my foulers/sighters so 1st string was only 7 rounds....

180 VLD's, BR2 Primers, Virgin Lapua Brass, 50grn RL17
Avg Vel - 2824
ES - 25
SD - 8
Group - 3.125 H x 3.357 W

175 RBBT's, BR2 Primers, Virgin Lapua Brass, 50grn RL17
Avg Vel - 2892
ES - 20
SD - 7
10 shot Group Size - 3.070 H x 4.187 W

180 Berger BT's, BR2 Primers, Virgin Lapua Brass, 50grn RL17
Avg Vel - (9Rounds) 2762
ES - 33
SD - 12.7
10 Shot Group size - 2.027 H x 3.752 W

With the ####ty wind we had today I am not putting any stock in the group sizes at this point. I was holding center and looking for velocities and un-blown cases rather than group sizes.

Obviously the 180BT's showed the best promise with the Reloader powder with approx 1/3 the vertical dispersion than the other 2 but still needs to be properly developed.

As soon as I find a good supply of bullets and H4831SC I can start to get serious with this one. With only 1.5lbs of 4831SC on hand I hate to work up a load for a powder I may not be able to find for awhile.

It would be great when you get some long distance shooting done with these bullets to report back what types of drops you are seeing. Would like to see how the Chinchaga compares to the Berger BT.

Thats another awesome toy Richard !
I'm a bit late reading this thread and for a long time I've been wondering what to do with the ton of once-fired 284 brass in my bins.
Now a solution ....:)

Nice rifle and good start. The 284 Shehane is an interesting cartridge Bill knew what he was doing when he blew the case out. Do you have any velocity expectations? Your initial velocities seem low considering the straight 284 by Charles Ballard was reaching 2910 out of a 32 inch barrel using 4831sc, I understand you are in the early stages of load development. I have included three 7’s as an FYI two competed in last years F Class world championships.

Charles load info.
Success: 2910 FPS with Ten-Shot ES of 7 and SD of 3
At this point I began working with different primers, neck tension and seating depth. After trying Federal 210m primers, CCI BR-2 primers, light tension, heavy tension, jamming, jumping, we settled on 56.0+ grains of H4831sc with CCI BR-2 primers. We ran about .002 neck tensions with the 180s seated just touching the lands. This load gave us 2910 fps velocity with an Extreme Spread (ES) of 7 fps and a Standard Deviation (SD) of 3 fps over ten (10) shots.

284 Shehane
Scotland’s Grant Taylor shot a .284 Shehane to finish 3rd overall in the individual F-Class World Championships at Bisley, England, Grant reports: “I have a .284 Shehane and it’s very accurate with superb vertical spreads at 1000 yards I’m getting 2930-2950 fps with spreads in the 3-5 fps range. I use Hodgdon H4831sc powder, CCI BR2 primers, and pointed 180gr Bergers.”

I have included the JB calculations from the three referenced velocities and identified the GB team was 7.8” inside the straight 284 and 6.4" inside the 284 Shehane

JB calculation based on Charles Ballard’s 284 @ 2910
800 -122.9 -14.7 38.3 4.6 1826.6 1.636 1333.4
900 -174.3 -18.5 50.1 5.3 1709.2 1.531 1167.5
1000 -237.6 -22.7 64.0 6.1 1595.2 1.429 1016.8

JB calculation based on GB teams shooting 7wsm @3150
800 -102.6 -12.3 33.8 4.0 2014.7 1.805 1622.0
900 -145.3 -15.4 44.1 4.7 1891.7 1.694 1430.0
1000 -197.7 -18.9 56.2 5.4 1772.4 1.588 1255.4

JB calculation based on Grant Taylors 284 Shehane @ 2950
800 -119.2 -14.2 37.5 4.5 1857.8 1.664 1379.3
900 -168.9 -17.9 49.0 5.2 1739.5 1.558 1209.2
1000 -230.2 -22.0 62.6 6.0 1624.6 1.455 1054.7

Please note both Grant and the GB team pointed their 180 Bergers so their BC's would be improved upon how much is unkown at this time.

Looking to be in the 2950 range once the brass is fireformed. I may have to sacrifice my 1.5lbs of 4831SC to see how she does in the meantime. Obviously the 4831SC works in the .284 case well since almost everyone shooting it uses that powder. I was seriously hoping that I would find something that RL17 would finally work well in since I have yet to see any real performance from this powder.

I plan on working up some loads with the 180BT's for now because I can still get another 2 boxes.
