I picked up a CIL 30-30 bolt action recently (Made by Savage) it was in kinda rough shape, so I stripped the stock, de blued and de rusted, polished and sanded a bit, refinished, re blued (cold)

Of course, I relaized that I had given away my 30-30 dies a fw years ago..So I have some Redding dies on order. Meanwhile I *gasp* bought some factory ammo.

Yeah, it's for the weak. And I wouldn't sully a brand new rifle wiht the factory stuff, but this thing has probably hd plenty of it violate it's tigth chamber. ;)

Played around a bit, got the scope near zero and shot a group with a warm barrel.

Average velocity was pretty slow- 1890fps with 170gr Winchester Power Points.

I've got soem 130gr TSX bullets on the way, and I will try some 200gr Sierras, too...

Actually, the detach mag may be an asset in this case, since I don't see this rifle ever getting far away from the truck.:)

 Not another road hunter  :p

BTW, How do you think the 200gr loads will shoot?? Should be quite slow in that cartridge.

I'm not much of a road hunter, but I do liek to keep a (cheap) rifle in my truck. I'll proabbly swap the scope to something cheaper, too. Like a used Leupold or something...

I expect the 200gr bullets to be very, very slow. I am hoping to come up with a load that is right around sub sonic.

my bet is that with 170 gr bullets, slow as they are, would still dump any deer in its tracks within 150 yards[of the truck,of course]

Figures, Gatehouse finally getts a 30-30, and it's a damn bolt gun.
The reputation of that little rifle says it will shoot a lot better than those groups Clarke. You best get shootin' :D

And, I'm still fighting a whole F'n pile of viruses, trojans, adds, and crap on this friggn machine. I've run a whole sh*tload of virus programs, and other crap, and they keep coming. I may be in for a complete system wipe. :puke:

I was tracing down a gun story in Aus, through a Nigerian site. Bad move. Clicked the wrong thing. Been fighting ever since.
IE has so many popups it's pretty much screwed. Netscape still works... so far.

I had the plain jane, open sighted version of that rifle a few years ago. I decided it was so plain it was an embarrasment so I sold it. I regret selling it. It would shoot well, it was short and handy, had a detachable mag. It was a perfect "truck gun" or companion gun and I should have kept it.

I bought the similar Stevens 325B as a canoe gun. Damn thing will cycle empties through the single stack magazine. Mine cost 157.00 needed a new firing spring and I put on a sourdough front sight. Excellent shooter. Interesting in it's 20" barrell factory 30-30 170 grains from Win get 2030ft/sec or so. 125 Sierra Spitzers at 2450 shoot near MOA with open sights and dump caribou pretty well. I like the 170 Hornady's which on wet paper expand at very low velocities yet hang together at 2100 well enough to penetrate as well as 250 grainers from my 358 Norma.

Really fun little gun!

Love to hear your results with 200 grain bullets.

What kind of velocities are you hoping to get with the 130gr tsx's? I have some 130gr XLC's I was going to try in my CIL 830 but the reloading manuals have only lever action loads and those damn flat nose bullets. Should be able to improve the normal ballistics of this old round with spitzers in a bolt rifle.

I almost bought one like that off my uncle a few years ago, was going to have it rebored 30/30 Ackley improved just to see what it would do.
Bought a 30/06 instead, one day I still might try the ackley improved though
