Well, it's that time of year, time to start thinking about that new rifle. I'm looking for a bolt action, preferably 308. I have $1000.00 to spend and about the same for optics. This rifle should be a tack driver and last at least to be passed onto my daughter. Ideas?

If you are looking for a 2016 model, brand new, your choices just got a whole lot smaller at that price point.

A Rem 700 SPS (forget a wood stock) might be had for about 1K

A Weatherby Vanguard II (again synthetic).

A Browning AB3 in wood or synthetic (X-Bolts will probably be over 1K)

You "might" find a Tikka in it's simplest form (maybe) for about a thousand, but taxes would probably take it over that mark.

Anything that may have caught your eye in the last couple of years that was say $650-750 is now a thousand dollar rifle.

Of course, in the mid 700 buck range you can get a 2016 Savage XP Stainless with the factory scope (3-9 Kaspa) - they shoot good and unfortunately that's what 750 bucks is going to get you in a 2016 NEW rifle.

Me first, Me first!

Ruger scout!, fun, super accurate, and adjustable for size.

I wouldn't call the Scout a "tack driver" like OP mentioned he was interested in... Ruger Scouts are tons of fun, really portable, and a great "all purpose" rifle. But if he wants a "tack driver" for a thousand bucks, a Savage 10-TR or Savage 10-FCP-SR would be more accurate

Guess I need a refresher on what "tack driver" means. I've owned a lot (nicer) rifles that shot a lot worse......

I can't praise these scouts enough, not everyone's cup o'coffee, but great for what they are.

16.5" scout 100y 3 shots

18.5" scout 200y 3 shots

And yeah, $1000 these days buys much less than last year.

If I bought one of those Ruger Scouts I'd remove the break and run it with a red dot.

If you're thinking of passing it on to your daughter down the road maybe a Remington Model 7.

How's the Remington 700? There are also quite a few models. Which one would fit my need?

I think you'll find the response on 700's mixed. For the money there are much better options as Remington has been slipping for a long time since it went private equity. There are great 700's and they definitely have the most aftermarket support but fit/finish is marginal compared to the Europeans/Japanese on current production rifles.
