I got a new 45-70 Marlin 1895 from the EE and tried some 420 grain cast "Green" bullets. This 1895 has the pistol grip and a 22 inch barrel with Ballard type rifling, the guide guns I had were tough on the knuckles with the straight lever.
At 80 yards I got it to group into 2 inches with the factory sights.
I think I did ok with the big irons on the Marlin, a scope will improve things .

I've shot a lot of 45-70 with big slugs and black powder. Even in a 10 or 12 pound gun I've found that its nice to stop after 50 or 60 rounds.

Don't remember ever shooting one in a lever gun though. Might have to find me one someday. (now item 486 on the list of things to get. :) )

The lever big bores are fun to shoot. Lots of oommphh and quick to go thru carts. I love the feel and sound from my Marlin cowboy in 45-70. I find that 40-60 shells is enough at a time tho'. I am just trying out different weights and some cast versus jacketted.
