Internal lock, no thanks. I detest those things for three reasons - you cannot do a proper trigger job on them, they make the frame bulk out like the gun needs a diet, and they are a throwback to S&W's sellout. They should get rid of them entirely, NO ONE uses them.

This 586 is a little less chunky than its other bretheren and I do like that they're going back to wood stocks, but I would rather grace my safe with an original 586. In fact I just added it's stainless brother (original no dash with Goncalo Alves targets) to the collection which should ship tomorrow.

I have to admit, I prefer my Smith revolvers to be missing the lock thingy and to have a(n), honest to God, Hammer Nose mounted to the hammer (a revolver does NOT need a 'firing pin'). I am however encouraged that Smith is starting to build 686's in a 4.2 inch barrel length, because we can now try to buy 4.2 inch barrels as spare/replacement parts and fit them to previously prohibited 4 inch guns - that way we get to have our cake and eat it too! Let's hope they build the 586 in 4.2 inch as well!
