A few comments on the Remington 597: Bought one a few days ago--$200 plain jane grey plastic stock & open iron sights--for my 10 yr old son. Mounted a Bushnell 4x rimfire(very good scope for a 22 btw) on it, and we took it out today. WOW!! what a sweet little shooter it is. Ran thru about 250 rnds (CCI Blazer) with one jam (and this during dad's spray & pray rapid fire session). Just the right balance for a 10 year old boy. He loved it even more than my 17hmr! I ordered two 30 rnd mags from Cabelas.ca, and these are quite the cat's meow. They are Remington name brand mags (clear plastic) for $27.00 each, and they fit and feed perfectly. My long-suffering wife actually stood at the rear of the Jeep loading them for us--what a girl!!!! Does anyone know of any aftermarket parts for this gun? Seems like a good platform for a little fun!

If you were looking for a modifiable gun, the 597 isn't it. You can buy a Volquartsen trigger and extractor for it. That's about it. I like the one I bought for my wife though. The only thing I find is that with the 30 round mag the first 5 or so shots tend to be a couple of wanderers. Otherwise it can do an inch at 30 yards with a $10 4x scope free standing. You can't hope for a whole lot more from a semi.

My 597 22 WMR is falling apart. Less than 1000 rounds, the threads that held the scope base gave in and the whole scope along with the base fell off. I know I know, someone is going to say I tightened the screws too much but I know I didn't. Then the other day the bolt handle fell off. I can't make is stay in the bolt. It has gotten so loose you can just tilt the gun and and the bolt handle falls off. I tried to bend the little metal pin that holds the handle in place but to no avail. No Remmy for me ever again. My friend had several out of battery discharges...that's scary. The positive thing about 597, with proper ammo, it feeds fairly reliably and is pretty accurate, more than I am.

Ive heard way to many horror stories about these things... Everyone seemed to be happy when they bought it, and then after a while.. they crap out on you.. hopefully yours is different.

Ill stick to my 10/22.....

You can check out rimfirecentral for a little more info on the Rem 597...it has its own subcategory under Remington. Not much in the way of aftermarket parts though....more a tinker on kind of gun.:)

597's tend to jam with cheap ammo and crappy mags. I've used CCI Minimags in mine, exclusively, and its been ultra-reliable, with virtually no jams of any kind. Maybe 1 per 1000 rounds fired, at most.. Factory extractor and 10 round mags.
In addition to that, the rifle will print 1" 50m groups all day long, with the minimags. Over 10k rounds through the rifle.

I'm very sorry to hear that...:(...I was really looking at a 597 in .22 WMR....:yingyang:

It's funny, always the same few members that have to express their hate for the rifle in every 597 thread that comes up.

The only complaint I have about my 597 is that the bolt handle wobbles a little, aside from that everything works fine, it can cycle any cheap ammo I can get my hands on. The rifle is very accurate once a vq hammer is installed and I really like the contours of the stock, it fits me very well. For $200, you can't go wrong with a 597.

597

Hi..I have had a 597 for about 4 years and i have had alot of problems wih it.
mostly jamming and stove piping alon with so many missfeeds i lost count.
i tried everybrand of .22 ammo to see it if was that, and yes partly it was.
remington ammo is garbage DO NOT USE IT. the heads of the ammo was lose and jamed while feeding. winchester and the HV ammo were the best. also i have about 10 ma for it 7 ten rounders all from remington and i had to hand file about .100 of an inch from the back and file a slight angle on it because the mags are so losly made the bolt was hitting the mags. same with the plastic 25 rounders from remington. which also failed qualitly control. because not one seem to be the same size so they get stuck in the mag well. and the iron sights were so misaligned that i just through a red dot and or a scope. but i agree its well balanced, now with the mags modified it feed flawlessly. and it hold good groups downrange. but if i had to do it again.
I would have just got a RUGER 10 22. plus there are little to no accessories for this rifle.
