6mm, my very first thought in this process was just what you speak of, necking down the .300 WinMag, but then I started thinking about even more jam, thus the larger body. Good luck with your project, I'm sure it will be cool!

The 7mm-300 Win Mag has been around for a while, called the 7mm Yukon or 7x66 Randle. The 7mm STW will clean up the chamber *maybe*, if the chamber was a little on the large side to begin with, you end up with a line on your brass. I had that happen on one I built back in the 80's. If you have a cartridge designed that is slightly larger then the belt diameter at the base of the case, standard magnum rim (so rebated on the new case), minimum case taper to a shoulder that is longer then the 7 mag shoulder, and a couple thou larger in diameter to remove all trace of the original chamber, and with a neck that is at least the same as the 7 mag case in diameter and slightly longer. again, to ensure complete clean up of the original chamber. Take that all into consideration, your probably looking at something off the 338 RUM case, as you surmised. I would design the case on paper first (or use the RCBS case design software), and then see what comes closest, and go from there. Reamers don't cost that much, and you would have something rather unique. - dan

Something like my 8mm ARP, you could call it the 7mm ARP. :p It's made from shortened and blown out 338 RUM brass and maximizes what you can do in a standard length action (aside from a shortened and blown out 338 Lapua, which won't likely feed).

If I wanted to be different, I'd be chambering for 7mm/.375 Ruger.

If you just want to be able to take game at 600-700 yards, then load a 162gr A-Max in the 7RM at 3100fps, and rock on. It'll kill stuff to about double your required distance...
