hey guys, i just picked up my first new gun!(first new because i transferred ownership of a inherited .22 yesterday)

so i got the flat black Remington 870 Express Trio package, came with 3 barrels and 2 chokes from LeBaron. $534 with $30 mail in rebate...seemed like a great deal in comparison so i grabbed the last 1 they had in stock.

im thinking i may get a softer pad for the end of the stock eventually, but ill try it out as is next week.

one of the questions i have is about the rifled barrel.
will using a copper brush mess up the rifling?

i just cleaned it today using the solvent and oil, i was surprised how dirty the inside of the barrels were, but i guess thats just shipping oil or whatever they put on it for protection.

The factory doesn't usually clean after test-firing so that would explain the amount of detritus present. As to your question about the rifled barrel, the brush and solvent won't harm it at all. You may notice it fouling up badly if you use Foster-type slugs so if reserve the rifled barrel for sabot slugs if you find on that works well in it, especially if you have it scoped.

Looks like you're covered for your shotgun needs for the foreseeable future...

thanks mudgunner.
i havent picked up ammo yet because i didnt know what is a good cheapish brand. i dont want to pay a crapload but i dont want anything that will cause damage or give me headaches....but i guess when it comes to 12g there probably arent many misfires.
ill be getting some sort of optics, just dont know much about them yet so i haven't bought anything, i know i have a Bushnell one sitting in a cabinet that is 10+ yrs old that was on a 30-06..but no rings for it and i think its just a junk one...
should i go with a scope? look into holographic? i also saw some red dot ones??
i want something with magnification and i have no clue if the red dot magnifies at all.

didnt know that they test fire all the guns...but im not surprised at all...i guess i just never really thought of that.

covered for shotgun needs? really? what about mods :)
i want to get some sort of different stock for it, no interest in changing the pump.
was looking at collapsible ones and maybe one with some good reviews on recoil reduction. kinda want to make it look a little tactical but also only with functional parts...no cheap stuff.
i saw 1 collapasable stock that the pad flips down and the stock is hollow so it turns into a compartment... i forget what site i just saw it on though...and as you probably know, finding cool parts in canada for anything ...let alone guns...is next to impossible.

anyone know of any shock reducing stocks that have good reviews? i was just looking at the knoxx...and i was liking it till i saw all these reviews saying its harder to shoot with and it punches you in the face...
maybe just a good adjustable ar style one with a nice soft pad? know of any good ones?

My suggestion before you go alll tacti-queer is "learn how to shoot it". By the sound of things, considering that you're worried about ammo that might "damage your gun" you might be new to the 870.
Get a case or 2 of bitdshot and maybe 25 or so rounds each of buckshot and slugs, then find someone who really knows how to run an 870 and burn it all up.

Don't worry about cleaning your shotgun during this time but do keep it well lubricated. Pay attention to the action bars (a couple drops of oil every hundred rounds or so) and the bolt and bolt contact points inside the receiver (grease these up and leave them throughout).

Put your purse down when you rack the action, you won't break it. By the time you've worked your way thru the several hundred rounds the gun will be slicked up and you'll understand how things works.

I'm one of those guys who believes that when it comes to the 870, simpler is always better. If you learn how to shoot it and run it first, you'll find there's less need for gadgets and crap hung all over your shotgun. A simple sling, a bead you can see (I like XS, and am a huge fan of their new DEA sights), a SideSaddle if that blows up your skirt, a bigger safety (love the Big Dome from Hans Vang), a whole bunch of ammo and that's about it. ETA - mag tube extensions - I'm a fan of the Remington OEM 2 rd version and the Vang Compp or SGT 1 rd...

I do like the Hogue OverMolded Stock (full-size or Bantam - I have a short one on my 14" and the full-size on all three of my other 18"-21" guns), and think that forends don't get any better than the SpeedFeed LE version, maybe with a short chunk of 1913 rail screwed on in case you want to attach a light.

first gun...definitely completely new to the 870..(and all guns for that matter, i just got my PAL last week)... 1 reason i got it because everyone just keeps saying "its a workhorse, you wont have any problems with that gun"..other reasons were price and i liked it over the other ones i was looking at...sure i could have got a 870 knock off...but then i would just be wishing i got the real thing...and who knows what parts they cheaped out on.

what i meant by wrong ammo damaging the gun is i know you can/should only use sabot slugs in the rifled barrel, using bird shots will destroy the rifling(maybe not right away, but definitely over time)...chokes with different types of ammo and stuff like that.

my friend just came by to check out the 870 and told me to grab some winchester supreme elite..also it looks to be on the cheaper end of the ammo stocked at lebaron. $13 for packs of 5.
im going to grab a different choke as well so i can shoot rifled slugs out my 20" that came with fiber optic sights...looks to be much cheaper...$5 for 5...i guess open choke?
i have a turkey and a modified Rem choke.
anywhere cheap to buy ammo in the GTA?

not going to do a lot of accessories, just functional things. strap that holds slugs, no flash lights, cant hunt in the dark, its illegal

i wont be easy when pumping in the rounds, ive actually read that people were complaining that the rounds get jammed from not doing a full pump....dumb complaint...but it was something people were saying stay away from the 870 because of this... i read it and laughed.

oh and im goin to the range next thursday with my bro in law and his friend who is very familiar with lots of guns..so im sure ill get some tips from him.

Well - sort of. Birdshot will not destroy the rifling, either immediately or over time. Think about this - lead is far softer than the steel of the barrel. While it will foul the rifling which will require aggressive cleaning (mostly from the plaastic of the wad) it will not destroy it. As for choke, remember that larger shot sizes, particularly buckshot, works better in more open chokes (Cyl, IC, Mod) and while you can use the Foster-type slugs in a fully rifled barrel, they usually shoot fairly well thru an IC or Mod choke.

Just remember that just because someone "has experience with a bunch of firearms" doesn't mean they actually "know" how to run specific firearms.

Good luck

I've owned a few different ones. Fab Defence makes a superb AR based shock absorbing stock that's got enough spring for a 12g (I run it on my Norc870) and very reasonable, around $100 (though you need an AR stock adapter, which often fks up your sights)

Where can I get the fab defence setup in canada? And the AR stock adaptor where can I get that from?
What's the total cost to get all the parts?

Having trouble finding innfo on it, barely any reviews...is the Knoxx better? The knoxx looks like it comes with everything you need.

And do you mean I will just have to re-sight it in? I haven't sighted mine in yet, borrowing a magnetic bore sight tuesday then goin to the range thursday to test and tune.

Hunting and range...probably more time @ the range than field, but we will see.
I want the shock absorbing stock because I have a bad back, less recoil would be a good thing, I've shot 12g before, and I know how hard they punch.
I also want the stock so I can adjust its length, I'm not a huge guy, so a little shorter would be more comfortable.
But I definatelly see your point. I will be shooting it before I get a new stock.
Also, I have a habbit of never leaving things alone, I tinker with and modify almost everything.
