Just got my PAL. My buddy has convinced me to take up skeet. I'm looking at over-unders (I like the way they feel - shorter grip on the stock). Why would I pay $2000 for a Browning 625 Citori over a $600 Mossberg Silver Reserve or Stevens 512 Gold Wing? What does the extra $1400 get me? What else should I be looking for in a skeet gun other than how it feels?

Unfortunately the 2 guns you have picked that are $600 are a POS, not sure about the Gold wing but Mossberg is a confirmed POS. Trap and skeet guns get a lot of shooting, and even a good used one such as Beretta or Browning can cost double or triple that of the Mossberg POS.

I'm not much of a trap/skeet shooter, but i do get out and bust a few every weekend. I use my remington 870 and don't do too bad.... I suggest posting this question in the shotgun forum as you will get alot more advice. Just remember that free adive is worth what you paid for it and opinions are like #######s, everybodys got one and they aren't always pretty.

The high Dollar Browning is probably a fine gun, but I doubt the Clays will know the difference.

For a first gun, you could try something like this Baikal, Trade Ex has numerous variations in stock.

It is cheap enough, and Baikal is usually a decent gun. I have shot a couple and they worked very well.

Another affordable o/u that I have seen, and know it shot very well would be the Stoeger Condor.

I have heard a few negative reports on the Mossberg O/U.
I have no useful info on the Stevens 512.

semi auto baikal is a nice gun cheap to. my first time out skeet i had my 20 ga blot action shottie vented barrel and poly choke done the job paid 150 then bout a winchester 2400 semi auto great gun never failed and that was shooting it in -10 weather first week of febuary paid 399. you dont need to spend a fortune in a gun that you would be only using for skeet.

Are you asking about skeet specifically, or are you thinking about regulation trap or sporting clays?
On a formal, properly equipped range, or recreationally with your own thrower?

"...Why would I pay $2000..." Especially when you're new. You may find you don't like shooting skeet/trap. You have any shotgun now?
"...the extra $1400..." Gets you the brand name.

Thanks for your feedback. I truly appreciate your guidance. I will do a little more research and your comments will help me direct that research. Forgive my newbieness but what is a POS? I thought it meant "Point of Sale". I've tried Googling it but haven't been able to find a definition as it applies to firearms. (unless it means "piece of ...."?)

My intent is both range and recreational with my own thrower (actually my buddy's). I have used firearms (shotgun and handgun) on a range a few times and I know I enjoy it. I don't mind investing in something good. I am looking at this like golf. After my first couple of rounds with my Dad's clubs, I decided to commit to getting better and bought clubs that would last me. And they have for the last 8 years. I am committed to this as well and I don't mind paying for a half decent shotgun that I will still be happy with 5 years from now.

I have a mossberg , and for the amount of clays that I shoot I have no bad comments about it. It works flawlessly. It is a good place to start, and if you really get into clays you can always trade up without loosing a lot of $$$$

If you are as you say, committed and don't mind paying, then dish out the cash, and that high end shotgun will last you not only 5 years but it will be around for your children and so on.....

If you can get a skeet specific gun and don't look back, if this is what your intent is, but if you are just going to blast away a few clays on a weekend with a buddy or 2, hell you can get a Rem 870 and have at it, it can always double as a walking stick, a paddle, splint and so on.......no I am not knocking the 870,,,hell I have one as well.......
