I see the good in both new and old calibers just like the 7x57 Mauser and the 7mm-08 Remington , 6.5x55 and the .260 Remington. :) Choice is always a good thing and with all the new short mags and ultra mags on the market means that I will have to spend more for new toys to find out if they are as good as the manufacturer says they are.:p At least the firearms community is never boring and there is always something new to try.:D Change is good but I will not toss out the standards like the 06, 308, 338, 7mm RM etc..........

True...I'm a fan and user of the .280 Rem, .257 Bob, .250 Savage, .30-30, and have used the .303 Savage and the .351 Winchester, but it would be folly to ignore the advantages of a few of the newer rounds. Myself, I prefer moderate recoil and range, so the two newer ones that attract me most are the .260 Remington, which I think would be a more practical cartridge than my beloved .257 Bob, and the .338 Federal, which offers a bit more bullet weight than its .308 Win parent round. Unfortunately I think WAY too many people compare it to the .358 Winchester and in the opinion of most of these nay-sayers it comes up short. I hope more people go out and buy the rifles now that Tikka's cataloguing them; I expect Browning to follow suit soon if they haven't already. Maybe the Federal round won't be ignored to death like the excellent .358 was. The .260 seems to be gaining a following after a bumpy start. Even Sako is cataloguing it now!
I have no need for the WHOP! factor of the short mags but I must say it's about time the ammo companies caught on to the idea of non-belted mags, and if I wanted a bit more oomph than my .280 gives me, I'd look seriously at a .300 short mag.
Seriously though, with a few exceptions, I think most of the shooters who post here share your opinion about the new developments. Where we seem to diverge is on their necessity! (LOL)

"...new and old calibers..." It's a marketing thing. If a manufacturer doesn't bring out something new, even if it's just a new chambering in an old rifle model, on a regular basis they lose market share.

If there is nothing new... there is no money to be made... if there is no money to be made there is no reason for the manufacturers to stay in business.
Without the manufacturers Sport Hunting would go the way of the dinosaurs...let there be no doubt in your mind!
Everything we do for fun and recrreation boils down to economics... so cherish the old if you wish but if you want to see our sport survive be prepared to embrace the new.

Well and lets face it - it's fun for us too.

I have no need of anything other than my 30-06, really. But i'm interested in trying a few different things - just to see how they do the same job but different. Like the 7-08 (which i find intriguing) or the 270 wsm, or the 325 wsm, or the 338-06... Shoot a deer with any one of 'em and they're just as dead, but it's interesting to see the characteristics of the different cartridges and the effect they have on game.

I think my .257 Roberts is a better deer sized animal cartridge than a .243 because it will take a heavier bullet. 30-06 works fine for moose. I don't think I need anything that kicks harder than my 30-06, but could be persuaded if I had a chance to hunt big brown bears or won an African safari. The idea of a short magnum confuses me. Why do I want a short action that holds fewer cartridges? I agree that the belted magnum cartridge is unnecessary. Logical step should be something with a bit more case capacity than 06 with a more modern case design in .35 calibre, that would hold more cartridges in the magazine.

Wel that statement puts you solidly in the traditionalist corner bushhwacker!:)
But you answer your own question of "Why do I want a Short Magnum" with your assertion that "Belted Magnums are unnecessary"!;)

Well, you guys know I am solidly in the 'traditionalist camp'.

Cartridge A developed in 18.. Fired, hits moose in kill zone = dead moose.
Cartridge B developed in 200_ Fired, hits moose in kill zone = dead moose.

To me, that makes them pretty much equal.

Now, that's simplifying stuff right down to the point of no return :D

But, for close range hunting, like I do, it's pretty much the truth.

The magnums will live on, cartridges will come and go, but the above will continue to be true.

I love shooting my WSM and WSSM wildcats ( especially when I drop an animal or win a competition with them!:D ) but also love to shoot my 577 Snider, 45/70, or .58 cal. muzzle loader.
I also shoot a lot of trap and skeet , but have just as much fun hunting with my muzzle loading shotgun or BP cartridge shotguns.
It's all good!:D :D

Old & New

Got a mix of rifles in 'old' 6.x55mm, 7x57mm, .30-30 Win, .303 Brit, .30-06, .270 and 'new' .308, 7mm-08 ctgs, etc.

It's not the age of ctg but rifle it's fired from & the bullet placement that I'm more interested in.

577-450 is entirely adequate. These new repeaters will all disappear once the novelty wears off. Smokeless powder requires too much complicated chemistry. If I don't get it with the first shot from the Martini, "Fiihiix...Swords"!

I use brand new cartridges (300WSM) and very old cartridges (30-06/375 H&H) and everytuing in between (223/7RM/22-250) etc etc...

I like some new and some old, I dislike some old and some new.

However, the reason I may or may not enjoy a particualr cartridge has absolutely nothign to do with them being new or old, or "marketing."

Alot of people get thier knickers in a bunch over the new cartridges, liek short mags, ultra mags etc. No clue why these new developments irk them so much. I guess they get pissed off abotu DVD players, since you can watch a movie on a video, too.:p

Maybe they should turn off their computer, as well, since they can chat about their favorite 'caliber' at the coffee shop or at the range.:D

I don't know either... but it sure makes things interesting around here.
Our resident contingent of "droolboard wearing short mag hating can't tie their shoes never mind understand efficiency hurry timmy the short bus is waiting traditionalists" sure do make it fun around here!
My Dad beat me for making fun of the special kids at school. He never said anything about the internet.;)

The animals have not gotten any tougher in the last 100 yrs.or so.It is the hunter.A lot of people catch a disease called biggunitis.Nothing wrong with that if you want to go that way.I find that the rifle that I carrisd 50 yrs.ago still kills as good as it did then.

5 bonus points to bigred for the week's best insult :)

new vs old calibers

A moose shot with a properly placed old world 45-70 or a new world 300 WSM is just as dead as if shot with the Canuck favorite....the .303 British.:)
Just because its a new caliber doesn't make it better or worse...its just new and different. :D That's what sells guns and having the choice of calibers and rifles to shoot will keep the hunt and the debate going for another generation.:p 100 years from now when hunters look back at the long discontinued 300 WSM they can still share some 30-06 ammo by the campfire.:D
