My first AR is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I'm assuming it comes with a manual for take down and cleaning. (It's a 14.5" NEA)

Are there any preferred cleaning kits or cleaning products for them?

I have .223 jags and brushes for other rifles, and have a your typical gunnut's assortment of solvents and cleaners. I have a few Boresnakes for quickie cleans in the field as well.

Butch's Boreshine
Wipeout
Nitrosolvent
CR-10
Hoppes #9
Rem oil
Moly dri-lube

Are there any products that are just better for ARs?

Thanks,

Dave

Rem oil. Dump it and not on the gun. My suggestion use Mobil 5w30 for soaking small parts such as carrier and bolt to remove carbon. Wipe clean then lube lightly with TW25B grease.

Others use other stuff but this combo works fine for me for my purposes.

For actual cleaning stuff I have a chamber bore guide, Dewey rods, jags and wool swabs.

Look at the sticky AR15 Lubrication and cleaning thread at the top of this section. Helped me out when I first got my AR.

G96 does it all....I use it on everything including my VZ. I have zero corrosion issues. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes. Clean what you need to clean and then re-lube with it.

Protects Your Gun: Leaves invisible magnetic film over all metal parts which protects your gun against rust under all weather conditions, even salt water spray. Protects frequently handled guns against "fingerprint" damage. This is the single and best gun care maintenance product ever designed to solve a gun owner's cleaning, lubricating and corrosion protection problems. A unique formulation of active lubricants will not freeze, oxidize or evaporate. Designed with a pleasant odor, this gun treatment is assured perfect firing from 50 F below zero to 350 F.

+1 with everything Clobb said. Couldn't agree more - G96 is just simply... awesome. And environmentally safe to use (and the pleasant smell means I get to clean my guns indoors where it's warm).

All I use is a nylon patch kit, boresnake, carbon scraper, ample G96 and some mil-grade lubricant on the moving parts (bolt, carrier, charging handle).

I use it a lubricant as well. It's the only thing I use now. I have a big can at home and a travel size in my range bag.

What about the dishwasher? Can you clean it in the dishwasher? I only ask because I heard from a guy who's cousin worked for a guy who read about doing it on this site. Is it true?

Ballistol....has a ton of other uses (like cleaning leather slings). Has been around a long time and has no known carcinogens in it. Both a cleaner and lubricant. Used by the Germans from WWI to present, and some Seal teams.
