What is your experience with aftermarket barrels for the Ruger 1022?
Which brand is the best from your experience?
Where can I actually get one in Canada?

I have seen some Tactical Solutions X-Ring Barrels for sale and these appear to be some sort of steel barrel that is inside an aluminum sleeve. Sounds kinda cheezie... so what's the deal with that? Are they a good barrel?

The KIDD barrels seem nicely done but who sells them?

I'd appreciate your thoughts and experiences.

Thanks

Dlask will be your most accessible quality barrel... occasionally Kidd at the above noted vendors... Wanstalls carries some and Bits of Pieces carries Green Mountain barrels... surf the net, you will come across some options. Avoid Butler Creek barrels... IME.

I've got a Dlask 8.5 on my 10/22. She's an obnoxious little rifle with a distinct bark... And it is ridiculously accurate. I've got a 16.5 Shilen (from mystic) that is pretty good as well... Both eat anything, and both will one hole group if you do your part.

Great advise! It all really depends if you are bench rest shooting or freehand shooting. I'm surprized no one has asked that question. If you are only bench rest shooting. Dlask, mystic, kidd or if you have coin Volquartsen. More weight = less movement, IMO.
I along with a lot of others have ultralight barrels. Either carbon or tacsol barrels. They are NO gimmick! They truly are less than 1lbs!!!! 15oz for the Tacsol, 13oz for the Mag research Carbon barrel. Thus is you're walking with your gun, freehand shooting or teaching a child to shoot. These barrels are simply awesome!
Like Maecolis said, a 8" barrel is wicked loud. LIke need ear protection loud.
16" seems to be the best medium between length and loudness IMO. I haven't seen any Olympic shooters use a barrel less than 16"
If you haven't swapped a barrel before, it's a cakewalk!!!!!

As a hint - if the new barrel is too tight a fit into your receiver, pop it in the freezer before you fit - word of warning... make sure it's oiled before you do it and wipe-down/oil it after you're installed. Condensation will rust your barrel if it isn't stainless.

I have a Butler as it came with my gun when I bought it second hand. It is a tack driver and I am happy with it. Mind you I have not used anything else yet so I cant compare it to anything else. But I have about 1000 rnds through it and I have no issues at all. Consistent and nice and light.

If you don't mind doing some paperwork (and waiting a few weeks), you can import just about anything from Brownells.

I've had good luck with Green Mountain, Adams & Bennett (Midway house brand, think they were re-branded GM). Krinker-plinker 8.5'', and a NEA 8.5''... Now that I think of it, the only two 10/22 that I didn't like were a Buttler Creek Bull barrel and a factory sporter barrel. Both of them shoot patterns instead of groups.

The idea behind the sleeve barrel is that you get the rigidity (and look) of the bull barrel, with the light weight of the sporter. I'd LOVE to get my hands on a 8.5'' threaded sleeved barrel.
