A co-worker is a site member, so I have seen what is available, quite impressive. So now I am also a member. I am also starting to look for a .22 for my son who has just passed his CORE ( I have a PAL) .

WELCOME from a fellow newbie....As for a .22cal i have a ruger 10/22 compact and a remington 597.. I prefer the 10/22 because ..just because...I really have no reason other than it looks better and seems to have more available acessory wise. Both are a great starter gun if your son is new to the shooting sports.

Ruger 10/22 all the way. super fun to shoot. I wouldn't suj buying the .22LR bulk wincherster ammo from walmart(big whitw box i think). my rifle had alot of feeding problems. it would catch the tip of the bullet and bend it out of line with the brass. I cant remeber what i shoot off the top of my head but its about $4 for 50rounds from canadintire(CCI maybe). shoots well no feed issues.

Yeah I have 2000 rounds of the Winchester Xperts and I wouldn't use them in a semi-auto. Bolt is fine though.
