This new gun that will be out in the US by November is replacing the 391 series or might complement it. I should have some more info from some of the writers that were at the Beretta showing.

It should be very soft shooting! A big plus is the lack of a return spring in the stock. That was a pain since the tube is chrome/moly but the spring was regular spring steel. The spring would gum up with powder and lubricant residue. BTW, I still have not cleanned my 391 Gold Optima since I got one of the first ones in Canada.

Here is more info from a friend of mines:

I got back late last night from a trip to Cheyenne Ridge's Signature Lodge in Pierre, South Dakota. Beretta has a bunch of us writers out there to look at the new A400 gas gun. Nice gun. It will replace the 391. Right now they just have 12 gauge hunting models, but within 6 months they say they will have sporting versions and within a year, 20 gauge guns. The A400 looks quite a bit like the 391, but is completely different mechanically. It's big claims to fame are that it shoots everything from 2-3/4" target loads to 3-1/2" hunting loads. We briefly tested all shell lengths and it worked fine. The gun also has a new gas system which Beretta claims will only need cleaning every 10,000 rounds! It does this because it uses less gas to drive the action and also because it traps the gas and forces it back out the barrel after it has driven the piston. Very interesting. The guns we tested also had the optional Kick-Off stock, sort of like an Isis deal. In all, it is going to be a good gun, but it's US$1800 suggested list price.

Henry;)

I guess you have to change up your line up every few years. I have an Extrema II that will shoot target ammo all weekend long, and when it was brand new we kept using it without cleaning for several thousand rounds, a full summer of sporting clays then the hunting season. Long for the days of being a Pro Staff member............... FS
