new brass question

If the necks are all round just load it up. No sense in over working it. with my new brass I normally just run it into the expander ball if they are out of round.

On a side note. Are you shooting a savage?

You are hardly working new factory brass with a full length resize. New factory brass will barely touch the inside of a full length sizing die and very little material will move at all. A once fired, full length resized piece of brass is actually larger than new factory brass in pretty much all dimensions.

I like to run all new brass through a full length sizing operation to take off any high spots that may have formed when banged around in the bag. I have had WWSuper brass not chamber on first loading because it was slightly out of round in the body. I have had brass from all manufacturers have out of round necks.

Some people swear by loading new brass without any operations done to it.
Some people swear by only neck sizing new brass.
Some people swear by full length sizing new brass.

At a minimum I would neck size new brass. I have crushed a few cases by having a flat base bullet catch the side of an out of round neck. Full length sizing is an extra insurance policy against deformed cases but 99% of the time isn't necessary and it adds a lube-size-clean stage to new brass.

Thanks for the replies, yes it is a Savage and an absolute joy to shoot. I think at the very least, I will run them through the neck sizer to see if they touch. Aiming at 1/4" bulls at 100 and touching or very nearly touching that bull every time is great. About 1 1/2-2" of drop from there to 200 isn't too shabby either. Very little recoil, albeit a bit louder than I had heard from others. Can't wait to shoot gophers with it. So far it is capable of way more than I am.

The new Savages in 17 Hornet are great shooters, not a pretty as a new CZ but you will have killed a couple of seasons worth of gophers before you get your hands on a CZ 527. FS

New brass must be checked for length, trimmed as required, case mouths chamfered and full length resized first.

^^ this. Best to check everything out; I quite dislike crushing cases by reloading incident.

(Hallelujah sunray, I knew I'd find someone to 'x2'!)

Edited to add; ...but then again, I'm shooting it out of an M14.
