ok...

here is what I think I want

Rem700 in 243 with a 1/8 twist barrel

pushing a 107HPBT around 2950/3000 FPS(looks good on paper!!)

I have a Mark4 3.5/10 to mount on her

will be used for some LR matches and Wolves/G-hogs

and...Barrel maybe 20" or 24 Max Varmint/match contour

with a Detachable mag(I would never use on a full blown match rifle but as a part timer/hunting rifle maybe)

VLD bullets will work fine in that setup , but a 10 twist would also work for bullets over 90 gr very well , and I would say for varmints it would be better.
My choice which you could use for deer, and varmint would be a mag sporter profile (easy carry) 10 twist , which is not ideal for long range tgt but a happy compromise. Your setup will be excellent for tgt but will lack the advantages for use on game .

Your build sounds just right, except I'd be contacting wildcatbullets.com and looking at his 115 or 120 grain bullets and you'll still be looking at 3000 fps.

Go with the

1:8 twist for sure. It is easier to get Sierra Match Kings and Hornady A-Max's in Canada. There are a few guys who bring in Berger so you would be able to try some 115 VLD bullets. A call to Richard at Wildcat bullets like mentioned would be something to look at. The 8 twist is still versatile but the drawback is the short neck of the 243. It would limit your going from a chamber throated for the 105-107's to possibly an 80gr bullet which is by far good enough for varmints.

The 10 twist works well but at times I wonder if I sould have gone 8 twist. I have some 95gr Berger VLD's to try out of it but have not gotten around to it yet. They may or may not stabilize.

Remington has a 700 with a 1/9 twist Varmint barrel

How would that tist work with the heavyer VLD/matchkings??

I really don't care if I shoot G-hogs with heavy bullets...dead is dead

but the idea of a good 100gr hunting bullet for deer is what I am looking for too

Jamie, try the varmint weight barrel with the more common match bullets and see what happens. Hell, if it's acceptable accuracy and consistency, why spend the money now? Wait for a re-barrel. That'sll only be between 2500-3000 rds. with a .243 if you're going to push it to top velocities for the majority of shooting.

I'm very surprised no one here has mentioned Lapua 107gr. & 123gr. Scenars which have an excellent reputation as well. Ironically, Lapua stuff is far easier to get (locally) where I live in Nova Scotia than either Sierra or Hornady.

Try the 87gr. Hornady V-MAX on the pigs & wolves. That bullet has near-match accuracy and will get the job done quite nicely.

thats the 105 Amax at 3000FPS

it looks like a real winner!!!as does the Lapua 107gr. & 123gr. Scenars

I think I will just buy the 700SPS Varmint next spring shoot out that barrel then go custom after....and try out the heavyer bullets in the 1/9 twist

You can get Lapua 123 grain .243 (6mm) Scenars? I'll take 1000.

.243 dia. 105 gr. Scenar

Muzzle Velocity: 3000.0

looks real good too!!!

but they don't make a 123gr for the 243 thats for the 6.5

I'd start from the stock up. The platform that the action gets bedded down into is extremely important and not to be overlooked. Can't go wrong with a blueprinted Rem 700 action in a HS Precision stock and a aftermarket barrel of choice. Personally I'd get the HS detachable magazine / trigger guard and a 24" medium heavy fluted barrel with 1:9 ROT and stick with bullets of 100 grain and less. The Remington 6mm AI shouldn't be overlooked for a real long range machine.

I finally retired my .243. I used it for varmints and for various precision competitions. I tried many powders and many bullets. All the 100gr and 105gr bullets were slightly under an inch @ 100yds. I had a 1:10 twist. I remember pushing 105 grain A-Max buulets with Varget one full grain over max in a lapua case to achieve a mere 2743 fps measured over a chrony. This was the fastest I wanted to safely push velocity being a grain over. This was far from the most accurate load. I hear lots of people boasting 3000 plus feet per second, but I couldn't come close with 100 grain bullets. I had a 700 BDL with a factory heavy barrel contour 24" long. Extremely fun round to shoot. Hell on earth for groundhogs though. I found that 70 grain match kings as the most accurate bullet for mine.

I have a rem700 243win , will do the 107HPBT .4 inch at 100meter, and at 200 it does quarter size alday, if you wanted something that can do that off the shell, get a rem700 in 243, it had 9.25 inchs twist, and it work great with 105gr Amax, or 107gr BTHP. Good luck!

want to sponser me:dancingbanana: your Tactical stock that action and I will get the barrel:D

Jamie Barkwell or I could change that too Ian's little #####:p

Consider a Remington XR-100 with a 22-250 bolt face. Put on a 6mm Gaillard or Smith barrel and chamber for 243 (or consider 6BR; you can be pushing 105's at or near 2900 fps). Total bill for materials and chambering would be about $1500 and you would have a gun that would be damned near impossible to beat.
