I am considering building a semi custom rifle in .260 Ackley Improved to be used for informal target shooting/hunting. I don't want to spend the dollars required to buy a custom action, therefore I have the choice of the following factory actions. #1 is a Remington M 700 blued action with a .308 bolt face and #2 is a Savage stainless steel action with a .308 bolt face. Which of these 2 actions would you use and why? I will be mating the action to a Bartlein or Krieger match grade barrel and dropping the barreled action into a decent quality composite stock. I will have the action properly bedded and will have the required trigger work done.

700 all the way... I have never been able to bring myself to 'own' a Savage in 60 years of rifles.

eeny meenie... both have pros and cons. With a shouldered headspace install, there will not be much difference in build costs.

If going Savage, go side bolt release, slotted barrel nut action of a few years ago. I am not warm and fuzzy about their new Axis type bolt internals... maybe they will shoot? But given all the older Savages out there, I wouldn't bother. And I have used many of these Savage actions out of the box with superb accuracy.

Some Rem 700 need TLC for peak performance... that will up the overal build cost.

The plus towards the Savage is the factory mag will feed 2.95" ammo. For a 260improved, that can come in very handy. The factory center feed mag will also feed this case but capacity drops by 1 rds in the factory mag.

Forget about using an AICS 10rds mag and expecting a full cap... will not stack properly.

So give all the accessories a review and see if what you want is available for the action in discussion. Give me a shout if you need help with parts.

What do you mean about this? You have caught my attention. Is it the Ackley shoulder hitting the rib and they just don't fit? I didn't understand the "not stacking at full cap" since they are still based off the .308. I assume the same problem would occur in the Creedmoor, 6.5x47 and regular 260. More details would be great. Contemplating a 6slr build and it is the same case. I see that a lot of competitors are using this parent case as well as this magazine so I am curious if it is specific the the 260 Ackley.

One of the advantages of a Rem 700 action is that you can use Wildcat composite stocks which IMHO are the best bang for the buck in lightweight stocks out there, if you are at all handy. Also if you want a bit longer magazine you can get a Wyatt magazine fitted to the action' though this is a bit tricky for the DIY guy as a bit of the action must be milled.
