What are you using it for?
.250 all the way, just for the cool factor. I have 2 myself, and the .250 will do anything the .243 will, AND you can use heavier bullets than the .243. The only problem with the .250 is finding factory ammo. If you're a reloader like me, then no problems.

Yes 250 has the cool factor, but there are a couple of considerations. If it is an older 250 it will be 1:14 twist rate which the shorter barrel savages have trouble stabilizing any bullet with length effectively limiting you to the 87 gr pill. The newer (1960) tang safety models have 1:10 and can handle anything. My favourite go to blacktail rifle is a 243 99F. Light, fast handling and still cool! I do have a pre 1960 99R in 250-3000 that shoots well, but it has a 24" barrel. I also have a 99A in 250-3000 that is a 1:14 twist rate, haven't shot that one yet.
Here is the 99R
The two bottom ones are 243's, the shooter and the collector. The scoped one is my go to rifle. All three are 99F's the top is a 1960 308F. The two 243's are within 7,000 serial numbers and the same year of manufacture but have different combs on the butt stocks. The interesting thing is the earlier one has the same butt stock as the newer 1960 99F

This one might come up for sale, haven't completely decided yet.

I would add to your list the .257 Roberts as i believe it is a better cal. then either, doesn't kick, and is probably a better cal. for reloading(i like the longer neck). Whatever you choose, all are good cals. that are easy on the shoulder and pocketbook, and i hope you get lots of enjoyment from your choice.....Ben

Hello Bogie. Jr #3 has a minty 1961 (yr verified by ser # by Mad Dog) Savage 99 in 243, non clip model. Has Weaver bases and the iron sights are there. She's a safe queen, has seen very few rounds. He never uses it, has just test fired it with a few rounds, shoots very well with factory Hornady ammo. He's taking it to Brandon next week end to put on our table. He wants a 257 Wby Mag, he has a thin wallet, so something has to go, to get! The best I could squeeze out of him for price, even for an old army buddy, is $750. plus shipping. I know you had your heart set on a 250, so delete this offer if you still wanna go for the 250. But if you choose this 243, no rush for you to cough up, I'll cover the coin to him and you can pay me as you can. As you know, will ship tomorrow if you want it.
