I have a nagant revolver, and I have a Tokarev TT33 in the mail from Jean at P&S Militaria. I also have a RC Mauser, which I just put the money order in the mail for today, on the way. When the trio are all together, I'll do a little photo op of my first three guns.

I really want to collect German pieces, but all I can afford (for now) are Russian pieces. Being a student sucks.

Next purchase will probably be an SKS or a 10/22. Something cheap to shoot.

Find an old used Cooey (or whatever), that will be much cheaper to shoot and won't need expensive upgrades like the 10/22. :D

A Canadian shooter who does not know what a Cooey is, holy cow!!! They were by and large inexpensive rifles and shotguns, made in the Peterborough area of Ontario. They were bought out by Winchester, who use to be in Cobourg (maybe they still are).

Im also a student, buddy, and I found a pristine Portuguese K98k for under 200$. Keep an eye open, and youll find great pickin's. All I buy is rifles under 200$ (cept for my M95 mauser) and they have all been a very positive investment. Just a while back there was a finn m39 in the paper for 125$ (a fellow gunnut was faster than I was ;) ) .

seeing as you are in victoria, try the buy sell and trade. Thats where i got some of my good stuff. that said, two years ago there was much more stuff in there, but from time to time somthing good pops up.

The buy and sell? I'm not paying money to look at ads of stuff I probably won't buy!

It's not like buying a car...you buy a couple of them and you're good. Guns are very quick moving items. I'd have to buy each one as soon as they come out. That costs a lot of money. Cuts into my very limited resources. If someone wants to give me the Buy and Sell...that's different! :D

Forget being a student, or even a graduate. If you want to collect legit German WW2, you'd better be studying to be a Doctor, Lawyer or a very lucky MBA ;)

Collecting is Not Cheap

If you want to collect, you are going to have to make some investments like getting a subscription to the Access to Firearms, and books. If you are collecting, you can't get the guns you want unless you invest in reliable information and books are portable. Even collecting Soviet Moisin Nagant rifles has become somewhat expensive. We passed them up at $29.00 in the 70's and 80's now they are 5 times that mount. Can't get much of a collection if you are going to be cheap. You may be able to get the first gun from someone at a cheap price, but that will probably be the only one you get from them. If you are known for low balling people for an item they won't repeat that experience. I have had more guns come my way over the years because I have paid fair prices and the seller was satisfied that the price was reasonable. Give up that pack of smokes and case of beer for a spell and spend the money on reference material, or save up for an item you have been trying to find.
I have found every piece I ever wanted by being patient, don’t expect to amass a collection overnight. Watch for the guy that rushes into collecting and like everything they attempt in life, rush into it and get out just as fast. Wait for that guy to buy high and sell low, he isn’t a collector, just a gatherer.

I'm going to start "collecting" once I'm done being a student and in a job somewhere, when I say collecting I use the term losely as I'm not looking to get mint examples just good shooters and if I do buy one with a bad barrel I'll simply get another one profiled to fit the gun and the original sights and stock (dare I say even if the rest of the gun is a matching example. :runaway: ).

Just your run of the mill surplus rifles to fill the safe and pass down to my kids and grandkids once I'm old and telling them about the history of them before I give it to them so they would have to hear my history lesson. :D

Com'on guys, cut him some slack.

I used to be the same, so I know what'll happen.

I started off with a couple of cheap purchaes, $200 and under. Figured that price limit would do me what I wanted to buy.

And then I figured, what the hell, an extra hundred and I can get a nice Lee-Enfield No4.

And then a couple hundred more, and there's a really nice condition German Kar98k.

What's an extra couple hundred, right?

Yeah, now I'm paying off an SVT-40 Sniper.

Figure the next step for me is one of those semi-auto MG-34's. :D

It's a semi-auto belt fed, which is classified (IIRC) as nothing more than a non-restricted.

Yes, as it was designed prior to... can't remember what the cutoff year was... 1945(?) you can use as long of a belt as you want.

They also cost $4,000. Which is about the only reason I don't have one yet... :(

If I got an MG34 or MG42...I'd really want it to be a WW2 original as well. That'd probably double the price, no?

You mean NOT avalible as its a coverted Auto or true auto .... unless ofcourse your lucky and have the 12(X) you need. :(

Dimitri

Actually Dimitri, I was referring to about 15 years down the road, when the 12(x) bull#### better be out of the cards. Those laws need to get taken out.

Because really. If I'm a criminal and want to go kill a bunch of people, whats stopping me from taking the pin out of my magazine? More jail time? Gosh!
