Hi,

I am not new to firearms just new to AR's. I recently purchased a Colt Socom and cleaned it for the first time today.

Just wondering if someone can help me answer the below questions.

1) I lubed it based on some youtube video's but find that the bolt does not move around as easily as they show. It moved in and out and around but it does not go out if I flick it. moving it in circles take no force but pulling it in and out takes lets say 5 out of 10. I am assuming this is because it is new but can someone confirm

2) I was using the tipton rod for the Star chamber brush but since the tipton rotates it is does nothing. Is there another way of cleaning this with the tipton or do I need to get a fixed cleaning rod?

3) The AR came with a Maytech pop up rear sight. If I am at the range and shooting from 10y to 50y what value do i place it at? I am assuming the line but how far off it will it be say at 10y?

Thanks T

1) Your BCG is a little stiff because it is new, that's normal. After several hundred rounds it'll start to loosen up. Holding the BCG upside down your bolt should not be able to slide down under it's own force.
2) Never used a tipton rod. Your Colt should have come with a cleaning kit I would assume?
3) Also never used a Maytech sight, I would suggest putting it at its lowest setting and just seeing where your rounds go. Then work from there. At 10y your rounds will always be a little low due to the height over bore.

I have the same rifle. Congrats !

Don't worry about BCG or bolt. Everything will be sound in 200 rounds.

About that Maytech rear site.
It is calibrated to be use with American military m... something 5.56 ammo at 62 grains. I don't remember it's name.
Bullseye at 25 yards and at 300 yards with the sight on 300.
I shoot only 25 y (yes I know my range suck...)

BTW... you got yourself an out of this world AR. ;)

Enjoy !

Are you talking about the bolt itself or the BCG? If you are talking about the bolt assembly, it shouldn't move forward and backward too easily because of the gas rings. If it does, it would be a possible indication of worn rings. For the chamber brush, I use the included cleaning rod for the exact reason you described with a lot of the aftermarket cleaning rods.
