I just got my new Colt 6920 today covered in grease.
Where should I start with cleaning and lubing this puppy?
Any suggestions on solvents, oils or combo solvents and oils?
Any constructive input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Congrats on your first of many AR15s.

Remove upper/lower. Remove and strip BCG. Degrease parts and barrel with either rubbing alcohol or naptha. Some folks like to use brake clean (chlorine free) but you better spray that cr@p outdoors. Lube the BCG and reassemble.

Field strip it.

Put every thing in a plastic container.

Empty a brake cleaner can on every thing.

Dry

Lube the bolt carrier and reassemble.

Wipe the exterior with towel

Done

Colt ( at least in the old days) are packed in a boatload of preservative oil. The first thing is to take that paper straw out of the barrel!!!

Like some other people have said it earlier already, use a lot of CLP. The rifle has aluminum. Cleaners that are safe with steel may not be safe with anodization.

Best way to clean is to shoot it. Burn off any residues in a few mags.

The is BAD advice all around. Any preservative oil in the system will be burnt. If the oil is in the barrel, it will shoot like a shotgun and will be much harder to scrub it off later on.

My AR was greased with factory brown gunk.

1- I took the handguards, grip and stock off.
2- Sprayed generous amounts of Spray-9 (Canadian Tire)
3- Wiped clean
4- Heated metal parts with heat gun
5- Applied Froglube paste (not their liquid)

Since then, I've fired about 1500 rounds of factory ammo and reloads. I ran a snake bore down the barrel a few times and fully cleaned it twice. I've yet to experience a failure to feed, fire or eject.

Thanks for all the excellent suggestions!!
CLP seems the way to go to remove the grease.
Any suggestions on cleaning kits or cleaning rods for AR's?
I can't wait to shoot this rifle at the range :)

Should all AR's be cleaned from new like this ? Or does Colt use a certain packing grease. ( excuse my ignorance if this is a stupid questions as I'm new to the AR platform)
Thanks

My barrel was filthy from factory. It also had preservative grease on the internal component. I always do an initial clean on my firearms but that is just me.

What colt did you get. Mine shot amazing first shot was dead on could not be happier. At first I was disappointed with the colt QC but it does perform amazing..

Have fun!
