I just picked up a general moose tag today and in the information section where we normally report names, date of birth etc there is a new box.

It is optional for now but will be mandatory come 2010 i believe but MB Conservation wants to know your hunter safety identification number. At one point in time if you were over certain age or had hunted before with a license you were exempt. In the near future you will need proof of certification in the MB Hunter safety program. Immediately if you are under the age of 19.

So for all of you MB hunters that have lost their card, or don't have one guess what is coming.

In actuality, you've always needed a Hunter Safety card to purchase a hunting licence. When you sign the huting licence, you are affirming the statement above your signature which reads " I possess the qualifications as set out in The Wildlife Act and regulations for this licence". One of those "Qualifications" is that you've taken the Hunter Safety.

In the past, most if not all Licence outlets would sell a licence without even checking/asking for it.

Only difference now is that the gov. wants you to prove you've actually taken the course.

If you've lost it, it should be no big deal. Both my brother and my father lost theirs and they just phoned up and got a new card mailed to them.

Was pretty easy.

When I first started hunting, 19 years ago now, there was a space on the lic. for a hunter safety number. I noticed it again when I picked up my caribou lic. in June. My guess is that its for people under 18 years of age. I may be wrong, but I don't think everyone has to have taken the hunter safety course. I have a hard time to believe that they'd expect somebody thats in their 70's to have taken the course. I'll definitely be looking into it a bit more to find out what the scoop is.

This is what I found online:
