Hi all

I just finished my first season of f-class at the ATPQ. Like everyone else, I shot what I had, and now I want to improve. Found a new barrel that I'll receive tomorrow, and I have a new stock in mind.

I'm not alone in that project, a friend of mine wants to have a new stock made for his rifle, so we decided to share ideas and ressources and make 2 stocks for next season. I'll take care of the wood parts, he bought a small metal lathe and he will machine parts needed for the build.

We made a list of what we wanted. Shoulder centered with bore axis as much as we can, bipod pushed as far in the front for stability, and we decided for now on an adjustable bag rider, similar to Jerry's rifle (Mystic Precision).

I built a prototype in mdf using hardware I had at home, to get the feeling of it. Next step will be to make a stock in wood for testing, and when all details are done, I will make the real stocks (curly maple)

Here is the picture of the first mock-up, and a closer view of the buttstock. Constructive comments are welcome !

GROSS

I know it is just a mock-up but please is this for FTR or TR or F-open as it makes a difference in the type of stock we would offer suggestions on ,

and also what weight do you want to come in at,

just asking

there are better stocks to copy

and most importantly what rear bag to you wish to use then you can make your stock fit that bag

It will be for F(TR), I am shooting 223 and my friend 308.
As far as rear bag, for now it will be this one, however I am open to suggestion, I know there are better option out there.
The platform under the bag has 3 large feet, and I have holes in my shooting mat., this way, the bag is firmly on the ground.

Make sure you don't have to remove the action from the stock to clean it.

If you look at the J Allen stocks - they have a quick release on the cheek, but you could build a cleaning rod hole into it.

I'm really looking forward to following this thread. I've seen your other stocks and I have no doubt this will be really well thought out and executed.

Thanks for posting Bob!

X2 on making it so you can clean it without moving the cheek riser or removing the action.

Good idea to make way for a cleaning rod, this is exactly why I started this thread, get some ideas from more experienced shooters.
Things just got interesting, new (to me) Shilen Select Match barrel, 1:7 twist, 28 inch long, bull barrel profile showed up in the mail. I'll try to find time to install it on the action. I also ordered a box of 90vld.

If you slot the stock for a cleaning rod, you will need a cleaning rod about 56-60 inches long:eek:

I have seen pictures of the other stock that you made and wish I had the talent. Now that you have a year under your belt with that stock, ask yourself what you would need to do to improve what you already have. Maybe changing the pistol grip slightly or redesigning the cheek piece hardware or butt plate would make your old stock just a little better for you.

Like the rear rider for the bag, Leo this years ORA F/O Winner has something like that but round bar stock hight adjustment for it is also would be nice touch.

When I make my stocks, I go by feel, whatever feels best for me to shoot.

Use a design that you can comfortably sit behind, and fits you well. Also I shoot the unfinished stock a few times so I can tweak things here and there.

Go to stockpossitoning.com I ordered an adjustable cheek riser and fully adjustable butt plate and it only cost me $115 to my door, and it is extremely well made.
