As the title suggest, a buddy and I are about to take on the task of shortening our LMG barrels to 18.6" which means repositioning the front sight base.

After watching some AK videos I can see there's more than one way to do it.

Assuming we get the base and cleaning rod retainer pressed off and the barrel cut, what's the best way to drill the new front sight block pin holes?

Right now we're going to press the retainer and block into their new position, align, test fire to check alignment then use a drill press and an end mill bit to drill out the holes.

Another technique I saw was to use an under sized drill bit then finish with the proper sized reamer.

Any tips, pointers, suggestions or words of caution?

Cheers
