I thought I would start a new thread about bedding the Stevens newly (Gen 2) designed stock.

*There is an awesome thread by Gitrdun floating around and I highly recommend checking it out FIRST before doing a bedding job, particularly if it's your first time.

Having said that, my questions are about the Gen 2 stock. It appears that Savage has redesigned;

1.the area where the recoil lug sits - appears to have seat molded into stock
2. the rear "post" - metal clip molded into stock
3. the front "post" - more recessed but I think an easy dremel fix.

I suspect some of these changes were done to accommodate the newly designed magazine which now rests inside the stock as apposed to being connected to the breach on the earlier models. (Gen 1)

Also worth noting; i find the new stock waaay stiffer than the older one. And the lattice work inside the stock appears to be thinner and less of it?? I've attempted to twist and bend in every direction and I can't seem to move it that much?? Of course the temperatures will affect the rigidity but in my place it's a constant 65 F. In other words, I'm not sitting beside a wood stove trying to bend it.

Question: has anyone bedded the Gen2 stock? If so what did you do to get around the metal clip at the rear post?

Thanks

I bedded one of these with pics and such last november or so. I also included all the work that went into it...Ie where to drill and thingslike that. Also included was how to really stiffen up the forearm with a 1/4 by 1/4 shaft and how to bed the rear lugs with lots of strength also. Try the search engine and if you cant find it i will sit down and find the thread for you...Kinda funny cause I just had a fella last week pm me for pics of the bedded and strengthened fore arm and i still have the pics here...

In the first pic you will see some bedding in the holes around the front receiver screw...That is just spare bedding as I wanted the holes filled right up and no you dont have to worry about using the barreled action for this move...Its just filling in the holes. I wish there was more bedding in the kit but for now beggars cant be chosers.

2nd pic is a 1/4 by 1/4 steel rod bedded in to the fore end. What you see are baffles on the left and right hand side of the steel square. The steel rod I used was about 7 inches long or so...It might weigh about 4 ounces give or take so no serious weight gain there. Lay the rod in the channel and down the middle of the channel is a raised bridge as well as the baffles to the left and right of it. take a pen and just mark on the sides of the sides of the square stock then pull out your good and sharp trusty wood chisel. Cut a nice grove on each baffle on both sides and down the middle so that the square stock can sit just below everything....What I mean is that you want the steel below the baffles so it doesnt touch the barrel. All you are doing is strentghtening up the fore end and not trying to fully bed the barrel any ways,,,from what I have seen it wont work any ways cause of vibration differences in the stock and baffles..

Now for the fun stuff...take a drill and make holes through every baffle...1/8 is good enough for this one. 2 per baffle is sweet cause you want a solid base. So done that now take the steel rod and give it a good scuff with 36 or 40 grit paper...something to grab to. So now mix up acraglass( not the gel) cause you want a liquid base...and pour some in the channel...swish it around and drop the rod in. Now fill up the rest of the channel with acraglass just to the bottom or top or what ever u want to call it of the baffles...The glass will soak through every hole u have drilled and will grab the square rod like you wouldnt believe...U now have a fore arm that u cant twist against...An this will be hell bent for strong.

Pic 3 you will see that the last 1 inch of the channel is not bedded....doesnt matter any ways as this will be a complete free float and all i was worried about is where my hand was going to be on the forestock so that it doesnt have any twist in it...total cost for the forearm is about 25 bucks or so....

DISCLAIMER NOW...this is what I found works really good and will give you one hell of a strong stock...every one has there own opinion and this is just mine....Rear receiver bedding pics to follow as well as that pesky metal clip thingie..but for now I am tired, havent eaten and i think Star trek is on!!!!

stevens 200 part 2

So for this you will have to look at takDrivers pics also but it will make sense in the end. This is like a 3 step process but it works just fine. It just takes a little patience and a couple of evenings. K so in Tak's one pic you will see the 4 little holes surrounding the front receiver mount bolt. We want to fill these seperate from the final bedding. So just rough them out a little with a dremel or real course sandpaper and have them good to go. When you fill the holes keep the bedding just below the receiver line as that will be taken care of in the end. Now for the rear bolt hole.

In Taks first and second pics at the rear hole is that pesky metal mount,we arent going to worry about that yet. To the left and right of the metal mount are 2 plastic pieces of stock sticking backwards. They end at the center of the rear stock bolt hole. Now there isnt lots to bed to so we are going to make a more secure bed for the rear. Sorry I dont have pics of this but will describe it as best a I can. Take a piece of 3/4 inch masking tape that will go across the width of the stock. Give it about 1/8 of a inch bend at the bottom( widthwise) so that it has a nice 90 bend into it and sick it across the width of the stock so that it touches the 2 plastic projections on either side of the metal clip and touches both inner right and left hand walls of the stock.

K so now you have a left and right hand openings that can be bedded and give more support to the receiver. The left hand side has no reason to be open as its just empty airspace and can be filled, the right side will need clearance for the safety but that comes later. So these spots should have been roughed up already and now fill them to just a little lower then where the receiver will sit in and fill those 4 front holes at the same time. Let it sit for 24 hours and pull the tape out and now you have a better bedding area to work with.

Now take the safety out of the rifle and fill in the slot with playdoh or clay or I used that electricians clay that is used for packing around wiring holes in houses and can be bought at the local hardware store for real cheap. Fill the slot in and form it to the receiver so that its nice and round. Cant remember for sure but at the front of the receiver also there is a small metal tab that comes down so pack a little around it also so that bedding cant get under or behind it. Now give the receiver and clay 2-3 coats of release agent and let it dry good. Now the metal tab,pop it and the magazine out and put the mag to the side as you dont want that in there for the final bedding.

Take the metal tab and apply one strip of masking tape to the top and front of it.Trim it so it just covers the top but doesnt fold over the sides. Put it in the stock. Now on the front of it is a projection that locks into the mag . Take the clay we used before and mould over the tab so that there is nothing for the bedding to stick to in the mag well. Now that you have this in the stock and clay in place take and apply lots of release to the top of the tab and front side and also over the clay area. Make sure that the release agent fills in the sides of the tab so that it looks like one piece with the stock. Dont want any bedding getting in any wheres.

This is getting to be a long story me thinks. So now dont forget release or vaseline on the bolts and lets get this done...So bedding mixed to finish it, bed that baby in there and let sit for 6 hours or so. Dont forget that you want enough bedding to do /or support the first inch of barrel in front of the receiver. So after 6 hours take the stock bolts out and give the barrel in front of the stock a good wack with the heel of your hand.It should just pop right out of there. Now if you look at the area of the metal mag holder you will be able to tell where the right and left sides are. Take a sharp knife and cut straight down on both sides. Also the bedding will have entered the mag well itself so its a great time to trim this out also and clean it out...Voila...the metal tab will pop right out and you have a nice clean mag well also. Put it all back together with the metal tab included, tighten down and leave sit for a day.

Now when you clean up the rifle and put the safety back in and try and tighten it you will see it doesnt fit, thats cause the front of the safety is hitting on the inner right hand side of the rear stock hole that we filled.. Just a little clean up with a dremel to get the receiver sitting down nice and solid and you are good to go. In my pics you will see a cream colored bedding as well as grey. The foreend was done with acraglass( not the gel) as I wanted it to flow and fill voids but the rest was done with acraglass gel.For the first 2 steps you can use the non gel stuff but it is messier...for the final use the gel stuff...Just color it to the stock...and now for my pics and hopefully it helps some ppl out. Its by no way the perfect way or easiest ...but it sure worked out good....

Great write up Icehunter! Thanks a million!

I'll get at mine this weekend and give you the bedding report when I'm finished!

Cheers and thanks again!

i lucked out i guess, bought a stevens 200 7mm rem mag from wanstalls and it turned out to be an older staggerfeed model with the mag box attached to the receiver. saved me some work when i get my boyds stock and i bed it.

The new ones arent bad once you figure them out. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to bed one especially with the metal clip but in the end it all worked out. I am happy with mine and with ammo that was loaded for my >223 T/C contender pistol just as a scope sight in load I was getting about .75" inch groups at 100 yards. I have loads worked up for the rifle but with work, weather, time etc etc I havent been able to fire it since mid June.
