New Getting Into Shooting

Hey guys,

I'm 21 years old from the Hamilton area, finishing up school and will be looking to get my PAL in the spring and start shooting as a hobby. I've been lurking for some time now and am still pretty undecided on which route I want to go for my first gun. I've narrowed it down to 3 firearms, all are different in many ways.

1. Remington 700 - little bit expensive after optics but gets lots of good reviews and is extremely easy to customize. Undecided on what caliber to go since I'm not looking to hunt but may wish to leave that option open (.223 v .308)

2. Norinco M305 - I like to platform and idea of a "battle rifle" but the .308 caliber may be a harder recoil than I expect as a first rifle.

3. SKS - Cheap rifle, cheap ammo, cool history. Even if it is not my first gun, I will pick one up eventually.

Can anyone help me out here? Is bolt-action to best beginners choice as far as action goes? And would .308 be a good cartridge choice?

Anyways, that's where I am at and will be researching lots more until the snow melts and its time to buy!

Cheers! :)

Matt

Welcome aboard!

.308 isn't anything you can't handle. For general target shooting, it gets a little pricey for things like ammo. If you can afford to shoot away hundreds of rounds, why not?

My only bolt actions are Mosin Nagants, one sporterized and one original. I have more fun with those than any other bolt action rifle I've tried, scoped or not. They're one of the last best buys out there for the price and quality, cheaper to shoot than .308 too.

I'm already on my second M305 with the 22" barrel after I sold my first for a CZ 858 in 7.62x39. Hella fun to shoot if you can find one. I think if you like battle rifles you should take a look at the CZ 858/VZ 58 platforms too since they're non-restricted ;)

Welcome to CGN ;)
