So after many moons of questions and looking I have my new moose /grizzly rifle..it is a new SAKO model 85 in stainless steel and synthetic stock..I had Corlanes lighten the trigger to 3 pounds.. it carries the new stainless steel Optilock Sako rings and bases...and that holds a Leupold Gold ring Vari X 111 3.5-10 scope.. its in .338 Winchester Magnum caliber..and I am looking at either Nosler partition .250 grains OR Barnes tsx Triple shock in 225 grains...

The BIG addition is a "stainless steel 3 piece QUIET MUZLE BRAKE " IT apparantly reduces kick by 40% and ONLY increase noise by 1 decibel..

The stats give 140 decibels for a high powered hunting rifle 3 feet to the side on discharge so 1 decible isnt all that much more..

The stock butt has a wiered shape that currently NO recoil pad other than a slip on will fit..Simms is working on one now???

Here are some photos of the new rifle

without that harris bipod and with no sling it weighs approx 9 pounds..maybe a tad under..it came w/o muzzle break , nor rings , bases, nor scope at @ 3.4 kgs approx 7 pounds.....

The trigger is THE best I have ever tried..ever. crisp, clean no creep no back lash absolutly perfect let off...

It handls and feels wonderful points well.. and fits me like a custom..

Casterpollox it came from the factory capable of shooting 5..FIVE shots into 1" @ 100 yards.. that was with factory ammo..I expect at least that good maybe a great deal better with good handloads..I have a SUPERB buddy who is amazing with handloading ammo..so if it originally had a 5 shot in 1" guarantee..then I expect a 1/2" or so with handloads...I will post the results as well as a sound meter check of the loudness..and compare it to a .270..a .338 with 250 grain has 27 pounds recoil while a .270 has 17 pound recoil...with the muzzlebrake rated at approx 40 % reduction in recoil thats 10.8 pounds less recoil... down in the range of a .270..

Thanks Rick I am leaning towards the new Barns TSX triple shock in 225 grain..Garry felt they would perform the best for my purposes however he will load some 250 Nosler partition to see what the rifle digests best..

Stanway yes i got a hold of Tim SHRAM @ Corlanes and they did the muzzle brake and the optilocks and scope mounting..it handles superb..feels great and in the next 10 days well find out if she's a shooter..

The photos dont do it justice its a great looking combo..and although not a pretty front end of the barrel you instantly KNOW this is NOT the run of the mill rifle...lol :dancingbanana:

Shooting next to a guy with a .338 is bad enough. Adding a brake will make it worse. Please warn anybody near you on a range.

While I prefer short barrels for rifles I use in the field, your outfit looks like a very practical outfit. I like the ballistics of the .338 for big game, and I like the scope position on the rifle rather than being too close to the shooter.

Let us know if the brake lives up to it's advertising. I'm afraid I'm more than a little skeptical. If the brake works to reduce recoil, it must direct gasses towards the shooter making it noisy, but if it doesn't increase the apparent muzzle blast I don't see how it can reduce recoil, although it could reduce muzzle flip by redirecting the gasses upwards. If it does live up to it's billing, I'll have to concede that brakes do have a place on hunting rifles.

In the meantime I just have to remember the shot I fired from a braked .375 without the benefit of hearing protection to begin to tw twi twi twit twitch!

I have been shooting a Sako 75 in 338 win mag for eight years.Has a Leupold 2.5-8 x 36 in Sako optilock mounts. I chose to Magnaport the barrel and install a Simms recoil pad which has made it a very comfortable rifle to shoot. It shoots very well with just about everything I have fed it. My go to load is 73 grains of rl-19 and a Nosler Partition 225 at 2820 fps. Congrats on your obvious excellent taste and judgement!

I just bought a 300 in Sako85 stainless/walnut. Your brake really looks sweet indeed! (But the 300 doesn't need it). I really like the 85, and have thought of getting it in 375 when it is tooled soon.

What is the actual name of the brake? Is it called a quiet brake? I too am skeptical, but if it doesn't make it noisier.....I'm in!

Nice rifle/scope package in a decent caliber for all NA game, Steven :D It should do you well as those Sakos have a good reputation for accuracy. My Ruger .338Mag had a wee bit of kick with heavy loads and I considered getting a KDF brake installed even though I don't like the looks of brakes on a hunting rifle. As it turned out, the addition of a Pachmayer decelerator pad was all that was required to turn it into a pussycat :dancingbanana: Too bad you couldn't get one to fit your 85.

Thanks guys..yes I KNOW that many many many have very negative opinions of muzzle brakes..HOWEVER..lol:rolleyes::p..it is more important to shoot it well and not be afraid of the kick..I went with 225 grain Barnes triple shock and will get some loaded up PDQ...

I was 'assured" that the recoil would be reduced signiuficantly by a muzzle brake and many that have them do like how they indeed reduce recoil..and t present it is NOT an option to put a Sims limbsaver on this rifle..it simply cant be done because of the NEW butt shape..
The only good reason not to as i understand it is bcause of "increased " noise levels..mostly at the range..yes I will politely inform any shooters close by..this muzzle breaks design ..the reason for the 3 piece brake is to make it quiet..only one (1) decible more in loudness..so the main objection should be delt with..???:sniper:

BC BIGBORE..could you PLEASE get another AVITAR...the one...errr make that TWO you have are very distracting indeed..nice but distracting..:dancingbanana:

Aw shucks srupp, I see you appreciate my avatar also ;) We all enjoyed tod's revolving lovely ladies back a couple years ago  A friend let me try his older Sako blued/walnut .338 Mag and boy was it nice to shoot. My .30-06 at the time was way more brutal than his moose-masher and really fueled my desire for a .338WinMag. From a 185gr @ 3200fps to a 250gr @ 2650fps, it really is a terrific all-around cartridge for BC hunters :) My Ruger really likes the 225 grainers at a little over 2800fps and gives sub-one inch groups when I do my part. Be sure to post a range report after you put 'er through 'er paces :sniper: Enjoy...

Have you shot the sako yet? The pad is designed to redirect the recoil to reduce the felt recoil. You may be surprised, it might actually work.

For grizz, I'd go with the TSX or a 250 Partition.

Well, I'm waiting patiently for a range report and more importantly, a game report.:D I've been thinking of trying the 225 TSX in my Rem 700 for a moose load.

How does the factory pad feel? It looks softer than the sako 75 pad.
