I was wondering what everyone does to clean their new purchase. More specifically how far do you go as far as tear down. I usually just do a quick field strip on the gun and clean up the shipping oil, but this is also done to inspect for manufacturing flaws/possible warranty issues. I also run a couple of patches through the barrel to clean up the oil. Other than that, I mount the scope and go (and I don't want to get into barrel break-in because that subject is like d:h: :D )

Also out of curiosity, does anyone just take the gun as is and go shoot? And if so how was the out come?

I remove the action from the stock to inspect everything, I check the trigger, and adjust as necessary, then put it together and clean the bore and action.

I shoot 47 shots, cleaning between every shot for the first 20, then every 5th shot for the second 20, then 17 to properly temper the barrel metal. Then I fireform 100 cases using cream of wheat/black powder, swab the barrel clean, Then I shoot 100 rounds to find the most accurate powder charge. Swab the barrel till its squeaky clean then foul it with 17 shots again.

:)

You can do this once you have it all nice and clean.

Basic field strip / clean upon purchase.
Basic fire strip / clean each range outting
Complete tear down, part for part / full cleaning every 5 range outtings

Start with a good bore scrub - new or used.
Take it apart to check for contact or previous (ab)use.
Fire one and clean for 5 rounds.
Fire five and clean.
Start load development.

I remove the action from the stock and clean the shipping oil out of all the recesses. Then I re-assemble, run some patches of Hoppes #9, followed by Butch's, if necessary, and then I coat the bore with Dyna-Bore Coat. Done. Then I shoot the gun 10 times to cure the coating, clean again, then I proceed to keep shooting for a few hundred rounds until accuracy starts to drop off, and clean again. Rinse and repeat.

I'll field strip the rifle every time it gets used in moisture (whether snow, or rain, or whatever), to clean and oil the hidden metal parts, unless I've coated the exterior metal with a protective coating like Dyna-Gun Shield or Cerakote, or something, in which case I don't worry about it with the same level of OCD :D
