Lookin at the weatherby vanguard or the rem sps in stainless steel. Caliber not sure leaning towards the 270 win because i have ammo and reloading supplies for it but the 260 rem also interests me but does it give up much to the 270?. Will be shooting mostly deer on the prairie and maybe the odd elk and moose. My browning BAR jammed on chance at elk will be the last time for it in cold weather. Any suggestion on which gun or caliber?

well you cant get either rifle chambered in 260 Remington so the 270 Win is the logical choice. Id go with the stainless SPS and if you're after elk or moose, a premium 140-150 grain bullet would work well. For deer, almost anything 130 grains and up will do the trick

I have a .300 Weatherby that I use as my primary hunting rig and it took a little getting used to with the stock design. I also have a .223 in the SPS and enjoy shooting it as well. If you have to pick, you should go for the SPS. Hard to go wrong with a Remington. The .270 will do whatever you need it to as long as the shot placement is there.

Lucky you. I like the SPS stainless, and the price is right. I own 3 Model 700's (.243, .280, and 300 RUM) and they all shoot very, very well with my handloads (all under 1/2 MOA if I do my part). The remingtons are almost always shooters, and for the price of the SPS SS, it cannot be beat.

Calibre, well, If I were purchasing an all-around rifle, I would look at 300 magnum, either the winchester magnum or WSM. Very versatile with bullets from 120 grains to 220 grains. Same goes for the 30-06, which is probably bettter than the first two because it has less recoil, which is therefore easier to shoot. You also can' t go wrong the the .270, but it is not as versatile as the others.

260 rem

Say how about a new Sako in 260, there is a clearance right now on Sako 75 model in 260. All ya have to do is go to your local gun shop tell em you want a 260 in either SS laminate which is the Grey Wolf or the SS in a synthetic. Likely the best price in Canada will be P&D in Edmonton. I think grey wolf's retail was around $1550.00, clearance ones should be around $1150.00, plus GST.
Wait till you see the Sako 85 that replaces the 75, people will be rushing out for what ever remains in the 75 models.FS

I'd say you're on the right track going with a 270. It's a great flat shooting deer rifle and will certainly work on bigger critters. Since you've already got ammo / reloading supplies for it, it makes sense. My hunting buddy shoots 270 and I've seen what a great deer / antelope calibre it is. Recoil isn't too bad so it makes it easier to shoot well.

But like some of the other guys have said, you would have many choices of calibre that would be equally effective.

270, 260, 7mm-08......makes little difference.
Decide on the Rifle first, the cartridge selection will be the easy part;)
A stainless SPS in 270 would be a Nice Package and since you're all setup for it...even better:cool:
