i just bought a benelli r1 in 30-06 black w/synthetic stocks. it has a leupold 2x7 scope. i want use this as a deer and moose gun. i have heard a lot of discussion regarding loads in the ammo section, my big question is what is the truly effective range of this gun. i had a 300 win mag that i traded for it and i did alot of research before i bought that gun regarding the ballistics. i got this gun without doing the research because of the reputation of the cartridge and firearm manufacturer. any comments on the trade? any drawbacks or things i need to keep in mind? i welcome all information. thank you.

Some people love the r1's and others hate them Make sure you have the correct scope base, I had the wrong one and the rifle shot 8" low at 100yds. I'm thinking I will hunt with mine this next fall, we'll see how it performs this summer when I practice with it. I don't think you'll get the same effective range as a 300win, 300-400 yds maximum for deer. Probably shouldn't be shooting farther than that anyway. My r1 has the 22" barrel, and being a semi auto I don't think it will have the same velocity a bolt gun would have. I do like it though!

I find the 150gr Federal Vital-Shok Nosler BT work very well and would be a great white tail round.
The Federal 180gr Vital-shok Accu-bond or partition shoots awsome out of my benelli and will be my Moose round this year.

Its all about function and reliability. If it functions flawlessly, even when dirty, then it is a reliable hunting gun. If not, can you be confident in it when the bull of a lifetime step out. I know when I've moose hunted, the guns get dirty and get seeds and pine needles and every other thing you can think of in them.
But I don't own an R1, so I'll let you that do, decide for yourself.
BTW, the '06 will kill anything you can hit vitals on.
The semi has limited appeal to me, they generally aare not as accurate and velocities are bled off cycling the action, handloading has no benefit.

I will agree here if you are speaking about cheap semi's like the Remington 7400, 750.....ect but not the Benelli. The limiting factor is the glass and shooter not the gun. I'm one of 4 in my group that have the benelli R1 in .30-06 and we all can put 3 shot groups sub MOA up to 250yds.
again this is 100% speculation by some one who probably has never even seen one be fired let alone shot one them selves.

as for keeping the gun clean in the field and cleaning the gun if it gets dirty.
There is next to no where pine needles, leaves, bark can get in the benelli it is practally 100% sealed unless you walking around witht he action open. If you do get dirt in it and have to feild strip the gun it will take 5min to take it appart clean and put it back together. The Benelli is the easiest semi-auto to clean.

I have seen them, I was being polite when I used the term space age. Semiauto rifles are for guys who subsribe to the wall of lead theory.
A couple of reviews of them in magazines both braged about the 2" groups they shot with factory ammo as being "good enough for hunting".
That implies that you walk around with your's locked and cocked at all times?
Not exactly the safest system in the world.
i also have a benelli super black eagle 2 and i love that gun it is a joy to shoot. i am looking forward to shooting this gun alot and getting very accurate with it. the 300 win mag i had was ina very light gun and it really belted so you did not look forward to shooting it. i have shot 375 and 338 and they didnt kick as bad as that 300 did. so i am looking forward to doing alot of shooting with this r1. the 30-06 is supposed to be a much more manageable round recoil wise and the r1 has the same recoil reducing stock as the black eagle. i cant wait to get to the range.
There is this cool little thing infront of the trigger called a safety.....so your saying you walk around the woods with your action open to the elements and no rounds in the chamber?...sounds like a stupid thing to do doesnt it?
