Hi there, i'm new here and im from Nova Scotia. Just hoping to connect with the community after several people suggested this site.

Though i have been an avid bow user (target practice, not big on hunting)
I recently have developed an interest in fireams as well. If anyone has some info on what steps i take to take the tests, etc. For the required licenses, Id very much appreciate it if you could let me know!

I had a BB gun as a kid, but sadly it stopped working and i ended up throwing it away years ago. Many of my family members are avid shooters or hunters so id really like to get into it as well.

Thanks, I wish everyone here the best!

Welcome to the board and to the sport.

Here is an extract from my FAQ for my gun club (The Atlantic Marksmen Association - www.atlanticmarksmen.ca)

Question: How do I obtain a firearms license in Nova Scotia?

Answer: To begin the process, contact the Nova Scotia Community College (www.nscc.ca/Learning_Programs/Customized_Training/Firearms_Safety_Courses.asp or 902-491-4911 in Metro / 1-866-679-6722). If you are in the Halifax Metro Area, contact the Akerley Campus (www.nscc.ca/about_nscc/locations/Akerley/). There are two courses: The Non-Restricted Firearms Safety Course and the Restricted Firearms Safety Course. The first course is needed for a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for non-restricted firearms (most long guns like most shotguns and rifles). The second course is for restricted firearms including handguns and some designated long guns including some sporting rifles such as the AR-15.

You'll need the Non-Restricted course before you take the Restricted course. It may be possible to find a combined course that gets you both qualifications - ask the community college.

The safety courses usually don't include actual shooting but they cover the basics of safety, current regulations and laws, and basic handling skills. The NS Community College conducts PAL courses here in Nova Scotia. You can either call your nearest NSCC campus or call the NS Provincial Chief Firearms Office (902-424-6689 or www.gov.ns.ca/just/public_safety/firearms.asp) for details.
Once you have completed your course(s), you can apply for the appropriate PAL. The Canadian Firearms Centre (CFC) website (www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/) can provide the application forms available for download. The CFC website also provides current info on the cost and the photograph, reference and other requirements.

Download the appropriate form from the CFC website, complete the form and mail it in with your photograph, check and information as indicated on the form/web site.

Welcome to the site and enjoy, if your close to Chester, visit the Captain kidd rod and gun, great bunch of shooters.

Thanks alot everyone, Its always refreshing to join a forum and get some friendly and helpful responses. I've been really busy with work, but i hope to take the course ASAP (providing i can afford it, i've heard its costs a few dollars)

If anyone has any tips for me that would be appreciated as well, according to my father its very difficult to pass the course (moreso the restricted?)

Thanks Everyone. I'm from the valley (granville area) but im living on the south shore at the moment.

-edit I'm hoping to sign up for the course(s) in the near future.

Is it possible to complete both courses on the same day/ at the same time?

if you are on the South Shore there is a course at the NSCC in Bridgewater on 12 / 13 of Dec. not sure if it's filled yet , would make a great Christmas present for yourself .

Welcome aboard from another Gun Nut from the South Shore. You'll love this place! Did you manage to get signed up for a course at NSCC? Hopefully there was an opening still available.

I just read your remarks about being told that the course and exam are difficult. I think they are not. If you're unfamiliar with guns, then pay attention in the course and learn
the booklet materials and you'll be fine. These are not designed to eliminate people; they're designed to try to make sure any individual will be safe with firearms. It's all really quite straightforward. If you already have some knowledge of guns and gun handling, it will be more like reminders of what you already know. Any one of us will be happy to help with any questions you might have.
