G'day!

So a little intro born in Australia and moved to Sydney about 7 years ago from up North. Been hunting since I was about 10. Normal Aussie game such as bunnies, foxes, cats, goat and pigs...but going to get into a bit of Deer hunting this season as the rut is just aboiut to kick off so looking forward to that.

I normally hunted with a .223 for small game in Oz for a while but only with 55gr pills as I didn’t have a fast enough twist for anything heavier pills. And for larger game use a 308. We are not allow to have semi auto’s in Australia so the only option is a bolt action. So wanting something with a little more punch and compact for spotlighting as well in the last year I picked up a 6.8 SPC, I ended up getting a Remington 700 LTR in 6.8 REM SPC.

I get up to Canada a little bit around the Ontario area for work so thought it would be good to join up and have a chat with a few of you guys!

Welcome Ultrabat
If you get to New Brunswick look me up
You folks are in a rough part of the world.
You have had flooding, wildfires, and earthquakes.
Did the Japan or New Zealand earthquakes affect your area?
All we have to complain about are potholes and the 11' of snow we received from January to March.

Sidney, my family says it is a great place to be from, 'cause if you are from there, you aren't there!!! if you get to come to the real Canada (the low tax part) give us a call, vegemite and marmite are in the cupboard

Thanks! Will do. I am planning to be in Orlando in early May for work then head North to Canada. So I might be passing though ;)

Tell me about it! We have had some crazy seasons here of late... In Sydney we haven't had any major issues. Where the floods were is 12 hrs drive to the North, but I had some family in those areas. Lucky they did not have any major issues. We are all watching Japan that is such a huge disaster! I hope they can save the power plants and they isn't a meltdown!

But the rains will make for some great hunting in the coming years given we have just come out of a 10 year drought!

A few pics from a hunt this year.

ultrabat I spent 6 months downunder. Put 32000 km on a VW combi touring around. Lived on fish caught along the coast from Melbourne to Cairns. Fossicked in couber peddy, uncertain of spelling, it was in 1984. Welcome to the gunnut forum.
Oh and we drink the beer cold in this part of the world.

Welcome aboard.

Question for you.... what "cats" do you hunt (never gave much thought to what species of cat you may have there) and what do you spotlight for?

So BC isn’t the good part of Canada?? :stirthepot2: Joking – I would love to explore a lot more of CA when I have the time and get a few hunts in when I can too!

Wow back then you would have been covering some very rough roads! You can spend a lot of time driving about the place that’s for sure! Glad you have had a chance to see part of this great land.
Beer ice cold is the only way to have it!

Cats as in little ones! We do not have the big cats of NA and all are feral domestic ones..but I have seen a few the size of a medium dog!
Spotlighting is normally for rabbits, foxes, cats and pigs. You are not able to spotlight Deer even though they are mostly classes as feral in Australia.

Do you not spotlight at all?

Spot lighting in canada is illegal. The only people that get permission are trappers removing coon's from farmers corn fields after they put the dogs into the field the trapper runs around, checking the trees for eyes. Back in the 1970's.

Welcome on board! My brother's fiancee is a Kiwi, & it's so fun to tease her about being an Aussie...

Enjoy your stay!!!

Cheers
Jay

That's no fun! Spotlighting is very common here in Oz. Some areas thats the best way to hunt as the days are just way too hot and nothing is out and about.

Haha I am sure she loves that! You will have to say you know she roots for the Wallabies and the All Blacks are a second grade Australian rugby team.
