Hi,
I'm a AR/handguns guy and I just bought my first precision rifle and need some advices with the scope rings please. I bought a Remington 700LTR (308) with a NightForce 20moa rail and I want to install my spare Bushnell 10X for now. I want to buy a temporary 1" rings for this setup until I figure out what I want/need for my new scope(30/34mm). I understand and totally agree with the concept "buy once and the cry once" but I only need those rings for a few months so what rings do you guys recommend: Weaver Tactical , Burris XTR. Leupold PRW or spend more and get a set of TPS steel. More importantly what height should I get for this setup(NF rail & Bushnell 10X), I read that Low rings should fit but sometime need modification depending on the rail, the last thing i want to do is cut my rail like in 8541Tactical video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7uX6fJYnRw&list=TLDtewWz3pIQx-kzkEZG1ckoCu_Vjw3fGZ.

Thank you for your help
Really appreciate:)

I had a Bushnell 10x mounted on a weaver picatinny rail on a savage and I mounted it with low PRW rings. I did have to cut the base back to where it was flush with the end of the receiver in order to get proper eye relief. These scopes are relatively short so you'll likely have to keep going up in right height, which is not ideal because you'll get a crappy cheek weld - unless you have an adjustable cheek riser on your rifle. I definitely like the PRW rings though, they are very well made you can tell when the scope is laid in the rings that its nearly perfect.

Any inexpensive medium height ring will get you shooting for now, as long as the scope clears the rail. I would not advise cutting the rail. You will probably need a cheek riser of some sort regardless of what option you take with a factory stock..
I have a few Karstens (spelling?), which are affordable and do the job

Save your money for a quality scope, and ring set up.

I am/was in the same boat but JUST pulled the trigger 10 minutes ago on a set of rings. I have a Savage 10TR with a 0MOA base.

I initially had ARMS #22 medium rings around my Bushnell 10x Tac (normally on my M14), which I transplanted onto the Savage...until I swapped in the PST. The medium rings are nice on the Savage, but if they were staying, I would need a cheek pad.

What are your plans for the rifle, ie Chassis or better stock? This may dictate the rings you get. I am waiting for my XLR Evo to come, and the medium #22 rings would not clear the guard. So, I just went for the Vortex Precision Machined 30MM rings. These sit 1.22" high, which is needed for my setup. As for the base, well, I am going to have to chop my EGW base, as it won't fit with the new chassis. I believe this is pretty common, as XLR offers the service for free, if you buy their stocks. Unless you buy a Cadex or find a stubby base, this seems to be the norm.

Thanks guys for the infos! Where can I get a Karsten cheek riser or should I just buy the TacPro one, its the only one I could find. I look at AI and Cadex chassis but I need a good scope first so I'll use my B&C stock for now.

You need to think hard to see if you really are going to go with a 34mm scope like a PMII etc, because if you are going 30mm , you should just buy good Bander / NF etc rings in 30mm and pick up some ring reducers (the Brownell ones work as well as the Badger ones , but are much cheaper ...about $15 ) Toss the ring reducers after you buy a new scope

To answer your question Leupold PRW will hold just fine compared to the TPS ...I would only go TPS if you want the 1/2" nut release . Not a fan of the Burris XTR rings

If you are going to spend the money on TPS, you might as well splurge on 30mm badgers / NF and go the ring reducer route
