new guy saying hello

Hello folks,

I'm Nate. I'm totally new to the gun world. I am thinking about purchasing some guns for home protection. I joined this site so I can educate myself and form my own opinions before I go to a store and have someone try to sell me something to satisfy their needs more than mine, (that and the fact that I know absolutely zero about guns).

from one new guy to another, welcome and try not to get hooked! I noticed you say "some guns". Thats the right stuff. Id go with a good shotgun myself. especially if price is a deciding factor but these guys will steer you in the right direction. remember, keep to the basics and you cant go wrong.

Welcome. Lots of good information here. If you're going to arm yourself for home protection, make sure you understand the circumstances which will allow you to justify yourself in the eyes of the law if you ever have to actually use the gun. I agree with Benelli One that a shotgun is probably your best bet. Personally I'd go with a shortish-barrelled pump, and I'd learn not only how the law looks on its use in a defensive scenario (can't really stress this enough), but I'd make damned sure I'd learned how to actually use the gun, what it's capabilities and limits are, what the physical dangers are of using it inside a house, and what it takes to hit a target (and nothing else) when you're under stress. Best of luck with it.

two scariest things in the world, one is hear a grizzly growl in the dark and the other is hearing someone racking a shotgun behind you in the dark.

Thanks guys. I have a large german shepard and crime really isn't that big where I'm at. I was thinking of purchasing in case of some large scale event occurring and having to actively protect my property (eg hurricane katrina). I was thinking of a shotgun and possibly a handgun.

I don't want my children to even know they exist, I was thinking about keeping them underneath the plywood flooring in my attic (locked up of course). As recommended, once purchased I would definitely learn how to use them effectively.

Currently, when things go bump in the night (not very frequently) I usually answer with a bat, maglight and previously mentioned german shepard, and would continue to even after the gun purchase.

Welcome aboard. There are lot of SHTF (when/if sh!t hits the fane) threads that you would proble be interested in. They are repetitive but i like them and they give you an idea what what to prepare your self for and what to prepare yourself with.

Yea if you plan on hiding them for the zombie invasion I would reccomend locking them up with a combo lock with a combo you can set.....set it to something you already use as a password and won't forget. Also oil it up real good....make sure it's in a totally dry location. Yea seems kinda weird to me....but that's what the designer of the titanic said about lifeboats.

Oh, and do everyone a favor - go shooting at least once a year, if not more. Be familiar with your firearm, please.
