So after a year and a half of getting my PAL and endless nights absorbing all the information on this forum about what to get as my first firearm, i decided to get the Norc M14s(poly tech). Good choice? Bad Choice? as a first rifle, what do you guys think? I made my decision after firing a few different rifles from a friends collection and mde my choice because i'm looking to get my marksmenship up with iron sights (about 100 yards) then eventually scoping the Norc working on shooting further. (100 - 500 yards)

ps whats your opinions/methods on a good way of getting the cosmoline out of the bolt. Thanks

i have done some 500 yard(with scope) shooting with my m14, not a tack driver but effective, the iron sights are hit or miss whether they will work good or not, but 100 yard shooting with the stock irons is fun, as for the cosmo, try brake cleaner or take it apart and scub it out with wan soapy water,

LTR308 idea's sounds great. Then try to attend a m14 clinic for some learning the in's & out hands on.

Great choice and good value for a bigger calibre rifle. Pretty accurate at 100 yards as is with iron sights. Factory ammo can get expensive if you are shooting alot of rounds. Grab surplus 7.62 nato when its around, has been really scarce for the last two years or so. Recommend also getting a 22 cal rifle for practice (500 rounds for +-$20 vs $12-25 for 20 rounds of 7.62 nato/308).
 
M14s are great, fun guns to shoot-em-up, tinker with(or not...it's like crack, you are warned)....

Alternatively, you can get a decent, simple bolt gun(eg used Rem700) and shoot better than your typical (tuned) M14.

It depends on what you aim to use the rifle for.
 
It was my first rifle as well, no regrets.
Eventually you may get it scoped but it's fun to shoot with irons as well.
I have not swapped out any parts for USGI and I feel there is no need at all, maybe for a Garand rear sight assembly, but the rest is fine. A better stock would be nice as well, but your new poly tech came with a decent fiberglass stock, didn't it?
