New guy's question: Do I have to join a gun club before I buy my first hand gun?

Question: Do I have to join a gun club before I buy my first hand gun?

My restricted PAL is supposed to arrive in a week or two. And I am ready to start shopping..... However it seems that somebody said you have to be a member of a certain gun club before you buy a hand gun. Is this true?

If it is, are there any good rifle and pistol ranges near Vancouver?

And does anybody have any advise or suggestions on the ATT? Anything that I should do before buying my first gun?

If you see a gun you like ... you can buy it!
Just give the proprietor the money and he will "hold" the gun for you.
You will not be able to take it home until you have a PAL and an ATT to transport that gun from the shop to your home.
So if you see a good deal, grab it, just explain the situation to the proprietor,
(that you can do the paper work etc. when you get your PAL)
 
I had a handgun before I joined a club (Poco).....

Since you are in BC you should have no problem making a purchase and getting a temp ATT to bring it to your residence.

1)No PAL no gun
2) Temp ATT to get the gun home.
3) NO permanent ATT (to transport after the one way trip home) without club membership.
In ontario if you do not renew your club membership - they contact the CFO and have your ATT cancelled....
 
I'm just getting into the sport as well, although I have no idea when my PAL will be processed. Glad to have those questions answered as well, thanks for posting Terry. Does anybody know of any gun shops in Nova Scotia? The Maritimes doesn't seem to come up too much here... :D
 
I lived in BC. Good province for handguns.

Pay the store, they will hold your gun until your PAL goes through. Then you ask the CFO for a short ATT to take the gun home. Tell them you're putting in the paperwork to join a club, and will send them your application for long term ATT shortly.
Join Port Coquitlam. It is a good facility, allows guests, no BS about magazine limits (the mag limit is 5 , some stupid clubs out in the valley only allow 1 bullet at a time) and you can shoot pistols rifles and shotgun (slugs!) from the same bench.

In Quebec, apparently if say a person doesn't renew his membership to a club(eg business contract abroad for 9months...etc), the CFO starts sending letters suggesting one's restricted firearms will be taken away from him....

How does the CFO know your membership has expired. Its a different story for your PAL.
 
Unlike say Alberta where one can get a 5 year ATT which is good for err..all of Alberta(how nice btw, I feel like visiting my cousin in the next town and go to the range over there, of which I'm not a member)....Quebec ATTs are only good for the length of one's membership at a (restricted firearms) club. (According to current ''laws'' as I'm told). ie annual renewal of club membership and reapplication of ATT....

Oh and BTW I have added other provinces to my ATT, BC and SASK. Having friends and family in other provinces that shoot at a restricted range has its benefits.

You Quebec people also have some silly ideals too.

Perhaps just for fun I'll get Sask, Man, and Ont added to my longterm ATT

would be interesting to see if its easier for me in Alberta to get a 5yr ATT that includes Ont, or for someone who lives in Ont to try to get a 5yr ATT for thier own range.

After that perhaps I'll get Que added :)



But hopefully we won't need ATT's soon :)
 
they won't add Ont to your Alberta or BC ATT. I tried that. We used to get it, but then the Ont. CFO got all pissy and whiny about it.
