Hello all.

Yesterday the CFO gave me the nod to bring home my first handgun. I opted for a sig 1911-22 to help me get started, and on target, before purchasing a 9mm...I'm leaning towards the x5.

Anyway...my question is about handling my firearm at home.

-am I permitted to handle it unloaded at home? Cleaning...at the least...carry in house unloaded?
-does it need a trigger guard if I do?

Thanks

You can do anything you want as long as it’s not loaded with live ammo. Just draw your drapes!

If you want to practice dry fire a rimfire, I would either get snap caps ( I’m not even sure if .22 snap caps exist)or insert a fired casing first.

I will qualify by saying never ever point it anyone. Even if it it " unloaded ".

Seriously?
Of course you can. You may also use your bathroom, eat and sleep as you wish too. For now Comrad...

It speaks volumes about the successful social engineering by government when someone needs to ask a question like that.

Ask away ottrunner...

I have a rule which you might want to adopt: Live ammo never enters my firearms while at home. Not for just a second. Not just to check something. Never.
I have snap caps for practicing.

^^^Very sound advice, and best not to play with it with the drapes open, you dont want nosey neighbors calling the police on you.

The criminal code also has a rule about that, unless there are no rules about discharging firearms at your location.

Edit:

htt ps://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/Regulations/SOR-98-209/FullText.html
[h=2]Handling of Firearms[/h]15 An individual may load a firearm or handle a loaded firearm only in a place where the firearm may be discharged in accordance with all applicable Acts of Parliament and of the legislature of a province, regulations made under such Acts, and municipal by-laws.

Pardon my bluntness but were you not listening during the firearms courses you had to take to get your licence?
I am sure many on here would like to know who was your firearms instructor?

I think nobody really cares who the instructor is. Cleaning, dry firing , handling at home is not part of the course.

^^^^^this is correct.

Gents...I'm just trying to do the right thing.

as far as ammo goes, I didn't even bring any home yet. I will purchase some snap caps.
I do my range safety course on the 20th of December.

It does say newbie.

Cheers all for responses.
