I'd like to upgrade my hearing protection from regular passive earmuffs to something electronic. What I use now is fine for regular use at the range, but I've been enjoying IPSC and would like something more comfortable and practical to hear range commands and other shooters. I noticed that quite a few shooters are using the electronic earplug type, others use the electronic muff type. While I'm sure a lot of this is personal preference, what would you recommend, without having to spend more than the cost of a new pistol lol?

I think safety equipment is more important than anything, so I wear surefire sonic defenders under an MSA Sordin Supreme headset.

The surefire defenders are decent affordable plugs, and the sordins are around the 300 dollar range. If the price tag is an issue, just think about how much more important your ears and eyes are than a new fancy accessory for a pistol or rifle.

This article is a good read that describes what exactly you are getting for the extra money (beyond the better digital enhancements). I feel victim to the NRR rating figures until I read this and tried a friend's Sordins. I shoot outside and wear earplugs and my sordins in conjunction because I'm fairly young and want to protect my ears for as long as I can.

My regular old earmuffs broke at a match a couple weeks ago and I bought some Peltor Tactical Sports. I just shot my first match with them and they were pretty comfortable. Military Arms channel’s review of them kind of sealed the deal for me.

MSA Sordin in a heartbeat but if you don't want to spend a lot, the DAA muffs are pretty solid with gel ear pads, for a little less, there is Walkers low profile muffs are good too, esp if you have a smaller head, the speakers are a little tinny sounding of the bunch. Trusted and true are the Howard Leight is a popular choice.

Get good electronic muffs. Ones with auto shutoff will save a lot of batteries. Have a look a SRS Tactical's offerings. The Peltors that I use are $233 now, and are excellent.

To me, if you double up plugs and muffs then you don’t need to spend a lot

I don’t feel like I’m putting my hearing at risk with $60 custom plugs and peltors

The electronic in ear plugs are awesome, especially in this heat. But are $$$$ I met an RO who would sell a gun if his plugs ever died on him (he did win them at a prize table)

If you ever shoot rifle off the bench then be mindful of size. Some of the electronic muffs are quite big and will get in the way of a good cheek weld. Howard Leight Impact Sports are what I have and they fit pretty slim.
