Hey everyone,

I'm new on CGN and looking for some direction.

I've been shooting pretty much my entire life and now I am looking to get into more precision rifle shooting.

I've been researching for quite awhile on american forums and what not to come up with ideas for a precision rifle build. I want this rifle to shoot steel out to 1000 yards but also be 100% usable for varmint and big game hunting. Therefore I don't want it to weigh anymore than 13-15 pounds, and the barrel maximum length is 24". Any longer and it's a pain to maneuver in and out of a truck all day hunting. I originally thought about having a rifle ordered and built by GAP but with the awful exchange rate now, and the 1-1.5 year lead time, plus the hassle at the border, I'm looking for options in Canada. This is what I'm asking for help with now. I don't know places in Canada that would build me a custom precision rifle.

After my research this is what I'm looking at building:

6.5 Creedmoor
Defiance Deviant Action (this is why I was looking at GAP, their Templar action is made by Defiance) Would also look at a Surgeon 591
Barrel - 24" Maximum length in Sendero Contour (would look at alternative contours but still want that tactical look)
Manners T5A Stock - Elite Carbon Fiber shell with Mini chassis
Timney Trigger

Optic - Vortex Gen II 4.5-27 or NF ATACR F1 5-25. I'm considering buying the scope before the rifle and putting it on my 22-250 in order to learn the workings of it.

Who knows of a shop that can get this for me?

Thanks

I have heard that ATRS is quite overpriced for what you get. Just wondering if there's other builders or suppliers that would be able to get me the parts and then I could take them to a smith and get it put together.

My other option is to take my Remington 700 VSSF II in 22-250, shoot the crap out of the barrel, then take it to a smith, get the action Trued and rebarrelled in 6.5 Creedmoor. That way I could at least improve parts on that rifle one at a time.

Corlanes can build you what you are looking for but you will still have a 1 year lead time. I have a couple rifles built by them and they are all good shooters!

I would agree with cdn shooter talk to Rick and Dustin at Alberta Tactical they have built a couple pieces for me with great results. Always remember you usually get what you pay for.

In my opinion having a precision rifle that is also comfy to hunt with usually ends up as a "jack of all trades master of none" scenario.
I use an AIAW as my precision pig and a 7mm Rem Mag for hunting. I can take the AIAW hunting but Im 6'1" 230. Even then it gets packed around in a biathlon sling on both shoulders to distribute its heft.
The lighter and nimbler 7mm remmy is accurate but is not a repeatable sub .5 moa rifle like the AIAW (no half moa challenge jokes please, I tried my best lol) so it is relegated to hunting.

My advice is: Get two rifles, one hunts the other punches bug holes.

I had a rifle put together by Rick and Dustin last year and it's absolutely perfect. Aside from that it was cheaper than what I was quoted from some other smiths (ymmv but this was the case with my build). If you're wanting a full custom built with new parts you will probably end up in the same ballpark (+ / - a few hundred) no matter which way you go.

Why the 6.5 Creedmore? I wouldn't be satisfied with Hornady brass. Would go 260 Rem or 6.5X55, Lapua brass available for both.

I shoot many different brands of brass. Most are used beyond the 500 yd range in a variety of rifles and calibers. Most brands including Hornady work very well if properly sized and annealed. And it will last longer than you think. There are many very very good shooters using Hornady brass.

We "may" be a little more expensive than many "smiths" that work from garages due to our overhead, but the value added in so far as quality of produced product that has unrivaled back up as well as insurance and an accuracy guarantee may be worth the possible added expense.
We typically have a minimum of 6 months worth of back log on custom builds, so we must be doing something right.

I have one build currently waiting a barrel at ATRS and one from another well known smith. ATRS is only SLIGHTLY a little more money, but the professionalism and prompt communication has been impressive. I have yet to receive either rifle to know much more than that, but so far I am much more impressed with ATRS and would work with them again in a moments notice.

I've heard that ATRS is overpriced but that was not my personal experience. When I had two comparing invoices of ATRS (Defiance) with Tac Ord (Remington) each item was within a few bucks of the other other than -of course - the receiver and both rifles were excellent. Many other very good people out there can also build/assemble and, as a previous poster suggested, you usually get what you pay for.

It's good to hear that from someone who actually has had work done by them. I guess hearing from a friend of a friend of a friend isn't exactly the best way to base an opinion. I'll have to give them a call when I figure out exactly what I want and nail down my budget a bit better.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyones opinion on buying a $3000 Tactical optic and putting it on my varmint rifle to learn the workings and methods of using a tactical scope before actually having a custom rifle to put it on?

Buying the best scopes to start is a good plan, you may change the rifle many times but quality optics is a enduring value. IMHO.

I was told early on "if you can't see it you can't hit it.."

+1

Saw and shot their build. Awesome builder.

I have one from these guys that should be here really soon. I think they are function testing as we speak. Their website is nice as it actually shows you some builds and you can tell they take price in their work.
