I just passed my core test today and will have my licence ASAP. I have some friends that are taking me out deer hunting in a bit. But I would like to get out and do some small game hunting maybe some grouse. So I am looking for some good spots to try in the lower mainland no farther than Harrison. I don't know if I will find much grouse around there judging from what I have read. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

First off, best wishes in getting that hunter's number ASAP... if it doesn't show signs of arriving, get on them, they're likely uber backlogged with stuff right now.

I can't really recommend good spots for grouse, but can recommend just getting out and hunting in general.... it seems stupid, but even when you don't know anything, picking a spot and still hunting it (slowly creeping through the bush, with a tag for each creature you could possibly want to hunt and an appropriate rifle or shotgun - 12ga with slugs and bird shot are great for the "anything goes" days) is a great way to learn. I had to start from scratch and pretty much spent my first season tripping over deer and scaring them off, but I learned a ton. It's not as fun, and the learning curve is harder, but it's worth it.

I know that's not a ton of help with the "where" but in the end, going out even if you don't have a plan is still the right thing to do... beats sitting inside frustrated that you don't know where to go!

I like your thinking... I really will hunt almost anything even if it means I am eating squirrel by myself. It would take some convincing to get my girl friend on board with that

East harrison is a great place to roam around. The lower mainland is kinda wet for good grouse numbers but you never know. The ridges above norrish/suicide creek used to be good for grouse and bunnies but it's gated just past the bridge so walk in only. The chipmunk/foley backroad up in chilliwack may have some grouse but beware of fisherman as they frequent the road.
Your most probable chance encounter with game in these areas will be black bear and possibly a blacktail buck. I'd have both tags along just in case.
Good luck, have fun and welcome to the club ;)
