I just got my hunting license this year and really want to go out hunting. Unfortunately none of my friends hunt and I have no idea how to hunt or where to go. All I have now are the guns that could do the job.

Looking for a mentor to take me on their hunting trip in Ontario, to start, I don't mind trying anything. Thanks in advance.

to hijack on this thread I'm more or less in the same boat and would love to get out in the vancouver area this fall!

I have food and gas money :D

Hey guys, good luck finding someone.

You should start a general thread for anyone looking for a mentor in any area and guys can check it out and hook up.

Personally I'm in southern Sask, and while I'm still new to the area, I got no problems taking someone along,..

Grande Prairie/ Grande Cache is my other stomping ground and have some good areas if a newbie wants out for a few hunts.

just drop a PM

Don't be shy and just ask people. You would be surprised how many people you know who hunt, but for one reason or another don't talk about it. They may not allow you to come, as those people are usually very close with a group, but sooner or later you will probably luck out. Until then your on your own. Go to your local fish and wildlife office. Ask them where good numbers of whatever critter your looking for is located. They will usually help you. Find your county office and determine where public land lies in that area. If none, talk to land owners and gain access. Don't worry, just ask the worst they can do is say no. And start small, you don't need to try and bag a moose your first day out. Take a shotgun for a walk and bag a few grouse or ducks. Get the feel for the kill. Read how to dress big and small game and experiment with some recipies. Soon enough you will decide whether or not you want to pursue this activity. In doing this, you will gain more contacts. You'll find them at gun shops, resteraunts and coffee shops or through land owners. On the public land, you will bump into other hunters, and the odd's are pretty good some will be those you know. Bird hunters are usually happy to talk to other hunters and you may be able to tag along. Good luck to you both. :)

Join a club

There are hunting clubs all over the country. Bunch of people who like to fish and hunt get together and organize outings, events and all sorts of outdoor-related stuff. It is a great way to get to know other hunters. Through the social interaction of the club you will learn about your area and the hunting possibilities that are available.

Congratulations on getting your hunting licence. Enjoy and good luck.

Robert

Another idea is to organize a "gunnutz" social somewhere and meet a few guys.

As posted about the going by yourself. If you're up for it, why not. But use common sense and anything you're not sure sure about as in "do or don't do"
Don't! Let it pass, and find out for sure.

My only hesitation in going for the first time by yourself is if you have never been hunting or in the bush much in any way. Most people benefit from their Dad's or Mom's, or uncles, or cousins, or highschool buddies, haveing gone with them. some places and common mistakes can be unforgiving, and sometimes it's just a very simple matter of inexpereince. always let someone know where are you going, and being by yourself the first few times, in a safe area, will also be the safest way to go. i was almost shot by an inexperienced hunter once. (it was more related to pure stupidity than inexperience though)

Most of all, be safe, be aware of your surroundings, be safer, and have fun.
