Hello all,

My father and I decided to get our hunting licenses last year. Since then we have gone out a handful of times for small game and coyotes. This year, however I will be out in London for school and will not be able to go to the area we usually hunt (a provincial wildlife place the mnr takes care of and is over hunted as it is). I am looking for someone who would be willing to help a new hunter out with a) finding a place near London, Ontario to hunt deer, small game and coyotes and b) teach me a thing or two while were out there since I am still relatively inexperienced. I know that a lot of people do not want to share their hunting locations and stuff but I am having a hellova time on my own finding anywhere to go. I've been trying to use the ontario crown land uses atlas thing online but i can't figure it out for the life of me, not to mention it is awful slow. So hopefully someone could help a newbie out so that we can keep this great sport alive.

Cheers

I might be able to help you out. I am local here and hunt quite a bit. Drop me a pm sometime and maybe we can head out to the range first. I like many are very picky on who comes and hunt the land I have worked so hard to build landowner relations. I always extend the offer though if a buddy is getting into it, that I will go help him set up stands and even go call for him, IF he goes out on his own and finds private land to hunt. I have taken friends to spots before and it burned me in the end. Fields get tore up, trash left behind, and tresspassers start coming so the landowner just locks his gates or puts a log across the laneway, it just causes a big headache for all involved.

Which end of town are you living in?

I lived in London for 5 years. I understand your dilemma very much.

Your best option is to get permission from the farmers in the area. This can be tricky at times as some farmers are very possessive of their land. I found that the farmers around Norwich and Norfolk are more receptive to hunters. The farmers north of London such as places like Lucan, Exeter, Clinton & Walkerton were not so open to the idea.

There is some "crown land" just south of London on the other side of the 401 between St. Thomas and Tillsonburg. I forget what it is called, but it's overrun with humanity during hunting season with bullets and shot flying everywhere. My recommendation with that is to stay away to avoid getting shot.

Maybe, join the shooting range about 20 min from London (located in Aylmer)? It is called East Elgin Sportsman Association and get to know some people there. They always helped me get hooked up with hunting spots. They have a web page too I think.

Other than that, you would have to resort to driving north up past Parry Sound to get some crown land to hunt on.

Good luck,

KL

Somewhat related question;
I applied for a deer license and put myself in for the Antlerless and controlled draws, I recieved my Anterless tag for 92A, but I was under the impression that every deer license also included one Antlered tag for any WMU in Ontario, am I incorrect?

that is right but not to be used for the controlled hunt unless you get a controled hutn validation sticker to put on it .you can go north with a rifle and shot a buck with it yes DUTCH

I would take you out. I'm a about an hour and a half drive from London however.

Send me a PM.

If you go alone, please read up on how to properly dress game. I preach this a ton on here. Too often a new hunter kills something and then doesn't have a clue what to do with it. I can't stand seeing an animal go to waste.
